I agree! I don't use it anymore cuz it turns rock hard if left sitting very long.

I never considered it gunking up, but I also hit my black tank w/ the tank flush when I empty.

We have used both Happy Camper and Rid-X for RV, and we have to say both worked well. At the same time, the toilet paper we used also helped with keeping the black tank cleaner. We're heading out tomorrow for another camping trip, and will try to add water softening powder to all tanks and see if it helps keeping 'things' from sticking--when draining as well.

Don't use that White Rain or whatever its called garbage - it doesn't dissolve easily. The Calgon does, however. FYI.

Can't find Calgon powder anymore nowadays. I ended up getting the Arm & Hammer's Rain Drops softening powder from Amazon. Giving it a try this weekend.

As a seasonal camper, my trailer is connected to sewerage all the time, I always keep the black tank closed until it gets about 3/4 full, then I dump, shut the valve, pour about 4 oz of the blue Thetford stuff down the toilet, then add about 2-3 gallons of water.
My grey valve is left open all season. I may rethink that and only dump grey after dumping black tank, or when full. This would give the PCV drain to the septic tank a good flush. My new trailer adds black tank flush to the mix, so I'll be using that as well to help keep the tank clean.
I like the idea of water softener in tank. I too have a virgin tank and would like to get it right from the start.

I just put 2 cups of Calgon "Lavender & Honey Ultra Moisturizing Bath Beads" in my kitchen tank. The box says it softens the water so I hope it's the same as what you all are talking about. Smells good anyway.

Liquid softener, a couple dishwasher pills, and lots of water.
