We have a Bull Dog, and there's no routine maintenance required. We do keep a cover on the head all the time, and don't let it hit the upper limit when raising it to tow. This is actually the second one. The first snapped the motor shaft at six years old, and I think it was either too small of a shaft, or a slight flaw in the metal that just took that long to fail. Lubrication in the gear box was not the reason. Being the curious type, I did take it completely apart to see what may have led to the failure. Evan after all that time, there was sufficient lube on the worm shaft too.
About all that's helpful to it's longevity is keep the motor head dry, and the lower leg clean.
