Tongue jack replacement

I need to replace the electric tongue jack on my 267bhs. It’s got some type of short and only works about half the time.
The one I have is a 3500 pound capacity. Any recommendations for a new one?
On a related note, has anybody ever mounted their tongue jack backwards to the tailgate of the pickup doesn’t hit it?

We bought one of these BULLDOG - Powered A-Frame Jack, 4000 lbs. and it misses the tailgate on our Tundra by quite a bit. It's our second one of these, and is shorter than the first, and the head is a different design. Very pleased with it.

I have the same one, and just clocked it around to miss the tailgate on my RAM.

That works. My gate must be a little shorter.
The OP doesn't say what the TV is.

What do you do to support the tongue of the TT while taking off the old electric jack and installing the new? Leave it on the TV or put a board under it?

I went with this Husky model and am very happy with it.

I thought that it was just hype when I read about the 'ball screw drive' but the action is really smooth and percise. The lights on it are much more useful than the original too.

I bought mine from Amazon but I see that they're out of stock so here's another link. Same model number as mine but I don't have the remote:

https://www.rvautoparts.com/82084-Hu...c_p_31463.html

When I went to install it I thought about just hooking up to my truck to get it off the ground but then the truck would be in the way. I ended up using some wood and jack stands and had easy access.

Good luck.

When I replaced ours, I put a couple of jack stands under the tongue.

Before you do.. have you checked for electrical issues on your existing jack?
Many of them rely on metal to metal contact for a ground return. Usually just the bolts into the frame, where corrosion can be an issue. You might try running a good solid ground wire back to the battery.

X2, instead of a grounding wire, I use a couple star washers, to bite onto the metal.

My TV is an F150. Im not sure if the tailgate is any longer or shorter than a Tundra or Ram but if it didnt hit the motor on the tongue jack it would probably open all of the way.

I did do a quick check with a volt meter when we were trying to leave this weekend and I do have power and ground at the switch. It almost seems like it might be in the motor windings because sometimes if you hand crank it to a different spot it will work for a while again.

Sorry for the bad link. It came right off their website.

I've installed and changed the jack by dropping the front stabilizer jacks. Our TT is small, but came with four Domar 7500 lb. stab jacks, so it wasn't going anywhere.

You can do the above mentioned jack stands, or use a floor jack, also with stands.

On my Hummingbird the jack has been changed twice. The first time the dealer busted it and I pulled it to install a Jack It bike rack. Both times the trailer was simply put on the hitch.

The only problem with the Bulldog is the quick release for the foot drop. The metal it is made out of is cheap. The long part of the bar you pull to release the leg got tangled in my chains. There wasn’t a lot of pressure before I noticed and that long leg bent. When I bent it back (by hand) it broke. Etrailer offered to let me buy an entire new jack because they don’t sell that individual part. I sent two emails to the company that makes Bulldog and neither got a reply.

Yup, I agree you have to watch for that. We share the operation. DW is working the jack, and I'm unhooking the chains from the truck, and so far we've done well.

On a separate note, I kept that drop foot from the last jack I replaced, due to a sheared motor shaft. Just in case I do the same thing.

I think your box is deeper than ours, which would make for a longer (taller?) gate.
To answer your original post, you can mount the jack sideways in either direction. The mounting bolt holed are symmetrical.

If you already have an electric tongue jack, would you have to replace any hot or grounds wires or just use what's already there when replacing the jack with another one?

The new tongue jack comes with new wires. Simply run the hot to your positive battery terminal and the ground is connected to the tongue's mounting bolts. It's not a hard job at all. I replaced my manual jack with a powered jack... SOOOO much better. I don't remember the name brand I used though. I'll have to check.

I used a floor jack, two jack stands and swapped them out. Thinking about it now, I could've just used the two jack stands...

I replaced mine this week with a bulldog. Got a good deal on ebay. I just used a receiver I had with a 2" ball in it to let it rest on tow vehicle while I changed it. Simple job.
