Tow Question Opionion's

Yes or NO,

Can I tow a Jayco 33rlds with my Toyota Tundra Crew Max 2008. It has the TRD off road package with upgraded suspension. The dealer says yes, The numbers are below the towing capacities for my truck. I can buy a new truck if needed, but I love my Tundra for many reasons. I am over the whole non american thing. I have owned the other big 3 and I can say without question for the money the Tundra is preferred. Anyways, anybody doing this already I would love to hear from. 5 take delivery of my Trailer in a couple weeks from dealer. Just having some extras done to it...

Take care,

No. Unless I missed something, the trailer has a GVWR of 9950 loaded. Your Toyota Tundra has a max towing capacity of 9000 lbs. That's a half ton overloaded. Unless I read the specs wrong somewhere.

Sorry, but you made the cardinal sin of listening to the dealer. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, believe anything the dealer tells you regarding whether your TV will be able to tow something. The majority of them will say anything just to make a sale. If you check other RV forums (like irv2.com for example) you'll find many postings warning of the same. Remember, the salesman won't be driving that combination... YOU will.

Be dilligent, do your own research, get the facts and be sure!

We tow a 28BHS with our 2010 Tundra w/ Tow package but I don't think we would go any larger...with the tow package we can pull @10,000 # , looks like your might be too much weight for the truck. But I do agree, we really love the Tundra! Good luck!

I agree...

Some of the things you have to remember its not so much of it can pull it but can it stop it? Remember the TV had design limits on axle, brakes, and other parts.

GVWR is 9950lbs. if you load it to capacity, that puts you 1000lbs over towing capacity if your TC is 9000lbs. You have almost 1000lbs of tongue weight, and that's going to go up when you load the passthrough with gear. That tongue weight has to be added to the weight of wife, kids and whatever you throw in the bed of the truck. So, you are way over on both towing capacity and truck payload capacity and you haven't loaded anything in the trailer yet. I think you were had by a salesman. Now to your original question. Can you pull it? Probably. I talked to a guy in a state park that was pulling 11,000 lbs with a Tundra loaded with wife and three kids. I wouldn't do it, but it's really your call. You at least have the information to know what you are going to have to deal with, and it probably won't be a fun(or very safe) drive.

Good Luck with it..

Bulldog...NO!!!!!!!!
Did you add the weight of your family in the vehicle? Tow ratings include an empty vehicle with a 150 lb driver... anything else in the vehicle must be subtracted from the tow weight... and that is before you put the trailer on...

Sure you can tow it, but for how long before your TV suffers some pre mature issues. Also just being able to tow something does not mean the experience will be relaxing. When we wanted a larger TT we got us a larger TV first. Since you said you can get a new TV I would start looking for a 3/4 ton one now.

I have to agree....you might be able to pull it and get it moving, but you wont enjoy it.

If you are like me, you get all tense in the neck and uptight when pulling a huge load. I am now well within my specs and it is much more relaxing to pull.

IF you have the misfortune to be in an accident you might find that insurance will not pay out:lightning:... they will claim you caused the accident or were partially responsible because you had an overloaded vehicle...

Thanks

My trailer weighed 7,900 lbs/ figured 1,000 to 1500 for weight added in the trailer. My truck can tow 10,200. My GVCW is 16,000 lbs. I have upgraded brakes rotors etc that exceed what FORD & GM offer. My suspension is upgraded. The numbers shown to me were under that is why I considered it...

I will have to think about this....I may try is first, I have towed in the Service ETC...Motor T. I will know soon enough...

I believe people are doing it... If I did crash my weight is under the 16k. I weighed my truck at work at 5800...

Bulldogs is that 7900 lbs the actual weight of the trailer when Jayco weighed it at the factory or what the brochure says. Mine weighs 8229 from the factory. that is 300 + more than yours weigh. One more thing, I noticed that the other trailer we had the tires and axle were closer to the front of the trailer. The differance was about 2 feet.Later Ernie

We Need to get past the F150 or 1/2 ton thinking

In the late 1970's till 90's a 1/2 and f-150 was that. But 1,450 lbs is not a half ton 1,000 pounds is. Our trucks in modern last years are built far superior to the ones in past. It is often debated but numbers don't lie. The size of my axle the size of my brakes and rotors are miles away from a 1996 f-150 for that matter.

A f250 or f350 in the last years is past a 3/4 ton or full ton towing. The fact that we as consumers refer to this as a 1/2 ton is wrong. My tow is 10,200 my gvcw is 16,000. Those numbers are dont lie. I have towed with this truck for some time. I am just gauging if I should consider it. But of course you always get the it's a 1/2 ton mentality... were hundreds of pounds away from the same conversation, not including the specs of new equipment. I don't even have to hold my tailgate when I open it. My rear window goes completely down, I have this thing called a camera so I can watch when I place my bumper an inch from them curb. Its really amazing where Trucks have come since 1996. In 1996 we had pagers, now my Truck has its own cell phone number....

It's not. I took the truck to work and put it on the scales. I implore you to look at the specs for the brakes rotors etc. Toyota went above and beyond I could have asked, as are the others...But before buy a bigger tow vehicle that I wont need for 8 months out of the year...you follow...

MY 2 CENTS..

1 Ton = 2,000 LBS
1/2 Ton = 1000 LBS

My 1978 Jeep p/u is rated as a 3/4 ton but I can put 2580lbs in it. I ordered this truck brand new.If I read what you are saying than my truck should be a 1 ton. Maybe you will be fine pulling the trailer, Try it and if it does what you want than it is all good.

Bulldogs, you are correct in that today`s half tons are not like their predecessors in payload and tow capacity, in fact half and 3/4 ton name tags that we give them are obsolete. I think what posters are saying is that what is considered a 3/4 ton today. ie a 2500, is still more capable then what is still considered a half ton today and would make for a better combo. You mentioned payload. the empty dry hitch weight on that rig is 995 lbs and will be possibly be considerably heavier loaded and ready for travel. That combined with gear in the truck, hitch, passengers fuel, options added to the truck can really eat up payload.( BTW what is your payload?) This is the main difference in "half tons" and 3/4 ton, more payload with the ability to BEAR more weight, not so much TOW more weight. I have owned both and that is my humble opinion, FWIW. I think these guys are not trying to shoot you a line, just help out. Of course as we have said before, give it a try ands See how it goes, then make your own decision.
Best of luck, Lee
