My head is about to explode! How much empty weight are you pulling and with what size vehicle. I have a Tundra, 5.7 with tow package, weight dist. and stabilizers. I'm currently pulling an X23B Hybrid. Everything I read says I can pull max 10,000 lbs, but, I'm thinking 7,000 to 8,000 is safer. I want to upgrade, just don't want to mess up. Thanks.

If you actually have a tow rating of 10,000 poonds, shooting for a 7,000 to 8,000 pound trailer is prudent. The most important factor is how much payload the Tundra has. An 8000 pound trailer could potentially have 1200 pounds of tongue weight on your Tundra.

Then add the weight of all persons and gear to that. Check the GVWR sticker on the drivers's door post for payload.

It all depends on the vehicle setup, hitching system, and your personal driving confidence. I tow a 28BHBE with my Colorado Duramax. I am very close to max capacity loaded. I would buy a bigger truck, but nothing comes close to the mileage I get running empty. I put a lot of miles on a year, and is not towing long distances.

I have a 2012 Tundra Crewmax TRD with the 5.7. Mine's rated at 9,000. My trailer (2016 X254) this summer will be about 5,700 pounds loaded with around 800 pounds tongue weight. We'll also have around 600 pounds of people as well as 400-500 of stuff in the bed. It won't be the 7-8,000 pounds you're talking about but it will haul nicely. Your mileage will be single digits but it will do the job.

I too have a Tundra and LOVE it. You need to look at the drivers door post to see what the cargo capacity of your truck is. That is everything in the truck including people, cargo, hitch PLUS the tongue weight of the RV. You will run out of cargo capacity LONG before you run out of tow capacity. Tow capacity would be if you had a 4 wheel wagon, with little weight on the ball of the truck. You can drag 10,000 lbs down the road, but only CARRY about 1300, to 1600 lbs in your truck, including the tongue weight. When figuring the tongue weight, you need to add propane, batteries and cargo in the trailer.

Typically the tongue weight of a TT will be about 10 to 15% of the trailer weight. So a 7000 lb trailer (loaded) will be about 700 to 1150 lbs of tongue weight. As you can see, cargo capacity is quickly used up.

My trailer loaded is slightly less than 7000 lbs. We carry almost no cargo in the truck, and only two passengers. I would not want to tow more than I am now. We have no issues and two regularly in the Rockies.

I would bet your over your cargo carrying capacity. My Tundra is rated at 10,100 lbs towing, and with all the towing packages etc available my cargo capacity is 1528. With 800 lbs tongue weight, 600 passengers, and 400 to 500 you may be over the capacity.

My 2008 CrewMax is rated at 10,400. TRD sway bar, Firestone air bags, and it works ok.

I towed a 29BHS with a 2015 SR5 for years without any issues. Also towed a 31BHDS without any issues.
With a good WDH/sway control, and driving with common sense, you'll be just fine.

I tow Jay Flight 28BHBE with 2008 Sequoia 5.7L and all is good.
3720 # front axle, 3860# rear axle and Trailer axle at 7640# All ready to go camping for a week. No problem cruising 65mph and stopping on the 8% grades.
