towing a 32 TSBH a couple of miles

I have the 32 TSBH, with a weight of around 8300 pounds. There is probably another 600 pounds of accessories stored in it. I have a 2006 Tundra V8 double cab, 2 wheel drive with the tow package. Transmission, and oil cooler, plus the hitch. It is rated for 7400 pounds. My TT is stored at a campground at Myrtle Beach SC. Just down the road less than 2 miles is a State Park. The rates are less than 1/2 that of the campground. It is a straight shot, all flat road from the campground to the State Park. Would I dare to attempt to tow my TT from the campground to the State Park and back when I am done? I know the legal answer is probably no, but could it be done without damaging my truck or TT?

I just came back from MB. We always stay at Lakewood. I know the area you are talking about exactly.

While that trailer is way too much for your truck, I would do it. But, I would equip my truck with the proper WD hitch and brake controller. No need for sway control as you will never get over 40 mph. Again, just my opinion.

Save the cost of a new hitch and the roll of the dice....., have someone else with an adequate TV do it for you.

Just thinking out loud

For 2 miles, at a low speed, especially if you did it during periods of low peak traffic, I would guess the risks are minimal, but you are taking a chance. Does your TT have a WD hitch? Do you have a brake controller? I would need both of those to even consider it, but that's just me.

I like Eagles thinking out loud. I am sure there would be someone out there that would give you a hand. I know I would if I was in the area.

Do it, should be OK. JUst wait for a big break in the traffic flow and take your time. I might have access to a Tahoe TV durring that time if you have problems. I live .2 miles from the state park...close enough for you ?

It's not a matter of whether the truck can handle it or not as some of the other posters have already stated it most likely will, and I agree. However, the plaintiff's lawyer is going to have a field day with you if, by some extremely remote chance, you have an accident with liability in those two miles and it's discovered that you were grossly overloaded. Do you think your insurance will even cover you? It would be different if you were towing it inside the confines of a campground at crawl speed, but on a public road, I'm not so sure. You don't say what the speed limit is on the road(s) you're towing it. 25 mph is one thing, but at 50+ you could quickly lose control simply due to the "tail wagging the dog" effect if the trailer starts to sway. And if you go slow in a higher speed zone, you'll become a traffic hazard and irritated drivers may try to pass you- even illegally. An inattentive driver, unaware of how slow you're driving, could rear end you too.

Whatever you decide, good luck.

Thank you for all of the advice. No I don't have a brake controller, and I am not sure if my hitch is a wd. The hitch is part of the tow package on the tundra. Something tells me it isn't. As for the road and the speed limit I would probably be fine. Traffic usually crawls through that area anyways. Thanks exjay1 and ex9501 for the offers. And yes the state park has full hook-ups. I actually store the TT at Pirate Land. But at over $500 a week at Pirate Land and only $210 a week at the State Park...well you know. The State Park is almost impossible to get reservations for. Every full hook-up site I checked was already booked through October! And then fully booked starting again in the spring. They let you make reservations 11 months in advance. I won't be staying there any time soon, but wanted to know what everyone thought just in case I wanted to try it next summer or fall. Once again, thanks to everyone.

If I was you my biggest concern would be the lack of a brake controller. That's a lot of extra weight for your truck to stop.

If your not sure if you have a WD Hitch then you most likely don't because there pretty complex. Without the WD and no brake controller, I would not take the risk. Thats an awful lot of weight with no WD hitch. Thats just my opinion.

FPM said it best, the plaintiff's lawyers will have a field day should the unexpected happen. Probably ought to take up the offer of the gentleman living close by. I know some parks(not state parks for sure, but private parks) will even store your vehicle at a reduced rate and then set it up for your arrival, and move it back when you are gone. Best of luck.

I would not want to do it. You truck could probably crawl down street with that trailer, but you would need a WDH and Brake Controller no matter what.

A modest Weight Distribution Hitch and brake controller alone are going to cost you ~$300-$400 and you do need these to tow the TT. Then the WDH would need to be installed/setup with your TV and TT present, the brake controller could be done ahead of time. By the way the "Tow Package" are things like the receiver, transmission cooler, 7 way plug, etc...the WDH is altogether different. The WDH replaces the standard hitch ball and ball mount that you insert in the receiver for towing light weight boats/trailers.

If it was me I would call a tow truck service and see what they would charge to move the trailer. If it is only a few miles I would imaging they would do it for $20-$30 each way. Also, since you are technically a customer of the private campground and use their storage facility too, they too may tow it to the the State Park campground for you on occasion, for a fee of course. There is a similar set up on the Central Coast in CA where an expensive private beach front campground is next to a State Park. The private CG storage facility is down the road further from the SP CG, I have heard if you pay to use their storage they will deliver your TT to the State Park for $30 and another $30 to retrieve it.

Just a thought.

Clubhouse has the right idea here. I just traded in the same truck you have. Max towing is more like 6900 lbs. GCVW is 12500, which you would be way over.

You are storing the TT at "Pirate.........." place for $500 A WEEK!? Or did you mean a month? If you are paying $500 a week,,,,whew.

Why not pay one of your neighbors in the campground to move it for you.
