Towing capacity help

Thinking of buying a white hawk 24mbh that has a 6,750 loaded capacity and my truck which is 03' F250 5.4 with 3.73 rear end with a max towing of 7,500. With all this in mind and weight of cargo like a dirt bike or 2 and wood etc. would this be a safe thing to haul? The Rv dealer says I'd be ok with towing the 28dsbh which fully loaded comes in at 7,500 but I think I'd be pushing it. I also thought of having a 4.10 rear end put in to help with the tow but it's $

I'd go with your gut instinct and get the 24MBH. The salesman would tell you could pull the White House to make a sale.

Here is the original 2003 Ford towing brochure:

That F250 is more than capable of towing 7500#, don't sweat it.

He will not be happy towing 7500# with his truck. In this case, it's not the cargo capacity of the truck that's in question, it's the pulling part. remember, he has a 2003 model with the Triton 5.4 V8 mated to a 4 sp transmission. It's not a 6.2 V8 or a V10 hooked to even a 5 sp tranny.

I can't believe that 250 is only rated up to 7500. I had an 02 Explorer with the 4.6 V-8 that was rated for up to 7300.

It won't compare to today's 400+ horsepower, but it's more than capable of pulling 7500. My first work truck when I got my CDL was a 250 hp 4 spd auto 96 Chevy 3/4 ton that I pulled 10000# of skid steer with every day. Was it fast? No, but you shouldn't be and don't need to be fast while towing.

That 7500 rating was a flagrant ploy by Ford to push buyers to the V10 or the power stroke. OP's truck has the same frame, axles, and brakes, just less hp/torque.

What he said. In the end the burden is one you. The burden of safety is on you.

You didn't ask, but looking at your tow vehicle one could consider... How long are you going to keep that truck? It's 14 years old which is great. If you are planning on a truck change in the next couple/few years it may be good to consider how that could impact your buying decision now.

I'm a fan of buying what you really want. I wouldn't buy a bigger trailer for the fun of it. But I would say buying the smaller trailer could just result in upgrading to a larger trailer in a couple years (and possibly taking a loss on that transaction) and wishing you would have bought what you wanted at that time.

Happy shopping!

I had that engine in a 2000 Expedition and still have it in an '04. Both 4WD, still rated to tow over 8000. As your salesman said, it will pull it, even if hooked up behind the Space Shuttle. Doesn't mean it should. Loading up the truck itself, you'll still get by. The truck itself is ready for it. But your weak link here, IMO, is the transmission.

I'm not sure what you meant by "which fully loaded comes in at 7,500." If that's as it sits on the dealer lot and you add all your stuff inside, now you're beyond my personal comfort zone but, again, a 250 should do it with reasonably safe braking and handling, just tough on your drive train.
