Towing the 2011 Jay Flight 29QBH

Hello, I am new to the list and wanted to introduce myself and ask a towing question. We have upgraded from a 2007 Jayco 19H to the 2011 Jay Flight 29QBH. Its everything we ever wanted and gives us the trailer we need as our needs grow.

I do have one question though. I am having a hard time understanding the whole tow capacity thing and would really just like a difinitive answer, yes or no, whether our set up will tow this beast.

We have a 1997 Ford Expedition. V8, 5.4L 4x4 EXP. We will be putting on a weight distribution hitch and dual anti sway bars. We are using a Prodigy 3 for our Brake Control System. So I have a few questions:

1. Can my truck with this gear pull it?
2. What brand of Weight Distribution Hitch do you recommend?
3. What brand of dual anti sway bars do you recommend?

Thanks so much!

first thing to do is check the drivers side door pillar and see what it says for weight. There are many more factors that limit what you can tow.. this placard is the only real thing you can go by.

The MAX towing capacity for the Expy is 9200, and the GVWR of the trailer is 9250 so off the bat you would be overweight. In my opinion though is the 33' length of the TT and the 119" wheel base of the SUV. I had towed a 34' trailer (8500# GVWR) with a Hemi Durango. Although the engine and brakes were fine, the short wheelbased SUV and long trailer made the combination very unstable.

Your best bet is to upgrade to a HD pickup (insert favorite brand here) with a longer wheel base which would far better handle the trailer, or getting a Hensley type hitch would be your best bet.

devonquest --- Does your truck have a tow package option? If so what is your max tow capacity & tongue weight allowed by the mfg .Even if it doesn't have the option the door sticker will give you your info.

The dry hitch weight of that trailer is 920 lbs. The loaded hitch weight will be considerably more. Given the hitch weight and passengers and gear in the truck you will possibly exceed the payload of the Expy and its GVWR, even if you remain below its tow rating. This is the weak link in half ton trucks and SUV`s IMO. Not so much the weight they can tow as the weight they can bear on their suspensions. In all candor, that is quite a bit of trailer for your truck, IMO. Please check the weight ratings carefully and if you do use this combo, load lightly.

Weight distribution: I recommend the Reese Dual Cam or Equalizer. They integrate sway control into the WD system so there is no need for independent sway bars.

Welcome to the forum! Others with their own opinion will be sure to join in. We are here to help folks make informed decisions.

Thank you for all your input. We may be only doing very short trips, not loaded down at all until we purchase a new HD Pick Up...that or park this unit in a seasonal campground until we buy the new PU! In the meantime, how do you all feel about the The Hensley Arrow®? In comparison to the Reese Dual Cam or Equalizer?

I have never owned one, but they are supposed to be the best. If I were to do a new TT again, I think that I would opt for the Hensley, even with the F250.

The Hensley, Pullrite, and Propride are all top of the line hitches. I have never owned one either but they get very good reviews for performance. They are heavier (further adding to tongue weight) and much more expensive though then the other hitches mentioned.

Something to consider regarding some of the above concerns of being over your numbers.... even though you are going short distances, what if you need to stop suddenly and your tt pushes through because your brakes aren't able to handle the tt/tv set-up. You could be putting other drivers as well as you/passengers at risk. I only mention this because I've seen this topic repeated over and over as a liability... Not dictating, but the option to use your tt at a seasonal cg until you get that new tv sounds like the safer of the two options

Let us know what you wind up doing and definitely post pics

No..., not if you consider the real world "loaded weights" that the 29QBH could bring to the table when traveling with a family. Ignore UVW, and/or dry weights.

A simple check would be to take your loaded EXPY (passengers, full fuel, cargo, etc.) to a CAT scale and weight it. Subtract this weight from your EXPY's GVWR. The weight remaining is what you have left for the TT tongue weight, and the 29QBH will have a loaded tongue weight in the range of 1,040lbs to 1,200lbs (13% to 15% of an average family loaded 29QBH of 8,000lbs).

.....OR,

Subtract the CAT scale weight from the EXPY's posted GCWR, and then take 80% (20% allows for tongue weight, WDH weight, etc.) of this total will give you the "what you can tow" maximum weight.

IMO you will find that you will exceed one (or more) of your EXPY's weight limits, that being; GVWR, GCWR, Rear Axle Weight limit, and possibly the OEM receiver WD limits. There is not a WDH that can compensate for exceeding the tow vehicles weight limits.

I agree with the prior forum member responses, not a good TV/TT combination even under ideal towing conditions.

Bob

Well, I went home and looked at the inside of my door of the Expedition... 7200lbs. So, its a no go with the 29QBH. We will get the Jay Feather 28R instead. Max weight is 6500 fully loaded. We will also still buy the Hensley to avoid any sway.

Thanks for all your help. I will keep you all posted on the 28R

It sounds as though you haven't yet purchased the new Jayco yet. Did you have a chance to read up on negotiating the best price for your new tt? Happy shopping! Definitely post pics when you have the new tt!

I believe the 28R has the same floorplan as our 28BHS and the G2 29BHS. Yep its so popular they put the same floorplan in 3 different models.Enjoy your new trailer.

We have a 98 Expedition with the tow package, 4wd. According to my manual, it has a 12000 pound tow rating. Though I would not be willing to pull that kind of weight with it. We purchased a Jayflight 28BHS and it tows beautifully. Have only towed it about 200 miles at this point with no troubles. (aside from the rear tire blow out, cause I was too cheap to get the new tires right away) The2011 28BHS has a dry weight of 5400 pounds. Not sure what the needs of your family are, but we are a family of 4. Im 6.3 and my wifes no shorty. 6 nearly 7 year old twins, and one big dog. We have lots of room and lots of storage. This was a win win win for us. Now if I had a larger yard to store it! I hope you find a camper that fits your needs. Best of luck!

The 12,000lb tow rating seems high for your TV, could you be referring to the GCWR?

There is no comparison.. I have the HA and it turned what I thought was a well behaved trailer into a GREAT TOWER.. could not believe the difference. Well worth the $$$ I paid.
