The OP did account for the WDH @ 100lbs (reference OP post #5), and it was included in his loaded TT weight assumptions at that time.

Yep, sorry I did miss that. To me this still seems to be pushing it a bit, there isn't enough room for error for ME to be comfortable. JMO

Towing the 26BH with a Toyota Tacoma

I've let my feelings be known, so will let this be my last post on the subject . Have to state again that I'd be shocked if a) you were actually able to get the hitch weight as low as 10% of the loaded trailer weight, and b) that if you did, it would be stable. I feel like you're playing a best case scenario game that isnt likely to come true. Just want you to understand that going in.

Most rigs I've seen on other sites have significantly more than 10% hitch weight, and the general consensus is that more than 12-13% is best to ensure a stable towing experience. And if that ends up being the case, you'll be over your hitch weight rating. It's your call though.

This thread is a good example of a TV/TT combination potentially operating near and/or at the TV manufacturer's specified weight limits (maintained by the OP), thus the TV should operate/perform as designed per the manufacture.

IMO in these situations our personal towing expectations come into play, in respect to different towing conditions (hills, head wind, etc.).

Just thinking out loud.

Hi Dan, how did you add the 100 lb tongue weight? Did you add it the weight of the TT payload or did you simply add 100 lbs to the tongue weight that you calculated ?

Towing the 26BH with a Toyota Tacoma

Well said RE....love all the towing ideas and input you guys give. Wish it was cut and dry....but it isn't always. Let us know what you ultimately decide to do.

We have a Tacoma V6. It worked well for our pop-up, and does a fine job with our new X17Z. Except for MPG. Climbing out of the Ohio Valley we got 7.7 MPG. After leveling out before Indianapolis we got 9.7 MPG, but couldn't get that much if we did more than 60 MPH.

We are not at the 3500 max weight, probably closer to 3250. Does anyone have experience with this type of tow pertaining to MPG? I'm ready to trade vehicles and would appreaciate anyone's thoughts and ideas about what would be a better one for improved MPG. I realize 3250 is not a problem tow.

I would like to be able to go a little faster, and get a few more MPG.

Thanks.
This is a copy and paste of a post I made in April 2011. My Tacoma was a 2010 with Toyota's tow package (although I don't know how it compares to yours). I didn't think it was enough truck for a 17Z, which is 3500 gross.

I have to laugh at this moment, since where I live (25 miles west of Austin, TX) it is not common, but you sometimes will see folks in 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks (duallys, too) hauling large trailers with heavy equipment. We're talking Cat crawler loaders/dozers, which at the very least will weigh in around 16K, usually 20K or more; on a 2-3K trailer. When I see one of these rigs on the highway, I make it a point to stay way away, because I know they can't stop, turn, or control their load worth a flip. This thread gives me hope that folks looking to travel with their RV are making a concerted effort to get it right despite a lack of truly meaningful information across the board as of yet. As one of my favorite fiction writers puts it in a novel, the character says, "I've never been overgunned, but I have been undergunned." We can simply transform that to "never been over-trucked, but have been under-trucked."!

I think we have taken this one as far as it can go. It is now up to the OP to choose.....

It should be accounted for in both places. The anticipated tongue weight (based on the goal 10% of the TT weight) came in at 550lbs. I then added 100lbs to account for the WDH, which brought it up to 650. That 650lbs is also accounted for in the "actual" rear GVW from my spreadsheet (I added 650 to the rear axle weight from my CAT print-out).

Thanks again for all the help. From what I can tell, I'm right at the limit. Since I don't have plans to go on many long trips, and I live in Iowa (pretty flat, short camping season) I'm leaning toward going for it. I think the challenge is going to be as mentioned above by RightYouAreKen, getting the hitch weight down to 10%. If I can do that, from what I've read, that would be within, but at the low end of the "comfort zone" of 10-15%. I'm pretty sure I will know it is back there, but it isn't sounding like I'm going to be an accident waiting to happen.

Dan

Enjoy! I love my 26bh!!! Please let us know how you like it and how it ends up towing. Since we have got you to a decision, I will close the post. Thanks all for your insight.

Towing the 26BH with a Toyota Tacoma - Data Calculations

Here are some data calculations based upon a 12% and 13% tongue weight, which shows how much weight can be in the TV and TT to meet the critical numbers.
