Trading up?

Not sure if this is the right section but here goes,
I have a 2011 22FB I would like to trade for a 26BH of the same year.
What is the best way to do this? I paid for my 22FB outright, I own it.
If I go through the dealer what should be my difference in payment?
The MSRP is $2000 difference.
Thanks for the advice!

Sorry to say that I doubt you will get anywhere near what you paid for it on a trade. They loose up to 40% the second you drive it off the lot... now if they are the same dealer you bought the first one from they might work with you.. but be prepared to loose $$$$$

Sell it in a private sale. Craigslist or something like that

Once it is titled it is used and unfortunately the value can drop considerably. Since you know the new MSRP difference between the two you can see what price your dealer will come up with, how much more he wants for the 26BH, then you can see what he is really allowing you for yours. A private sale is also a consideration, but may take some time in this economy on a like new unit. In any event it will be an expensive transaction because you will also have to pay sales tax again, if Iowa taxes are the same as here that is. Just curious but why do you want to trade so soon?

I believe in Iowa you would pay sales tax on the difference in price if you trade with the dealer. If you private sale the unit you have and buy another from the dealer you would pay sales tax on the new unit.

That`s a more fair policy then here. In Va. you pay sales tax on the FULL amount of the new transaction, even if you traded one in every day!

Crabman, that is because "Virginia is for lovers" and the "tax Man''. My son used to live there and I think that the legislature stays awake at night thinking up new ways to tax.

I have to disagree that they drop by 40% I have seen 2008 models for $18k private sale, I don't expect it to sell for more than I paid for it, but, in the midwest RV's do hold their value.
I called the dealer I purchased from, he said this happens often. The unit I want to trade for is the 26BH, he said, Jayco is doing a big push on the units to get them sold for $14k.
I don't expect them to "pay" me to trade up but we'll see. I have a number I am willing to pay to see this through.
The tax is BS in Iowa. I bought my used Coleman, private party, and made the mistake of telling the DOT how much I actually paid for it. I asked them if the people I gave the money to will claim it as income so the state can get their tax on it as well, she said, "I doubt it." So do I.

Crabman, I am nitpicking. Our son is 5, he loves to camp! He slept on the jacknife sofa until the cushions stared to show wear, now, he sleeps on the dinette. Here I go, it takes time to make his bed. We, my wife and I, have our own bed, I want my boy, to have his own bed. I found this out on our trip to Minnesota, takes time to make his bed after our evening showers, then tear it down in the AM for breakfast. Really, the only reason!
Not too sure why we didn't buy the 26 to begin with??

I know what you mean. We kept our first trailer only 10 months, realizing it was just TOO small after just one camping season. It was a used 2003 Coachmen 24 tb with no couch, 2 small bunks and a very tight master bedroom. I ordered the Jayco, put the Coachmen on Craigslist and sold it in one day for what I paid for it. While waiting for the Jayco to be built we resorted back to tent camping for awhile!

WOW!! The dealer wanted me to pony up $7500 to get a 2012 26BH, I'll fish it on Craigslist if it happens, it happens.
Where is the best place to find out resale vale on mine?
After all the camper I have now is nicer than I deserve!!

Big Jim, I'm in my 4th trailer now, and have purchased them all using this formula...
List price x .66= price the dealer will take if you stick to your guns. I even went lower than that on my last one 43,000 x .66= 28300....I got it new for 26,800 and they threw in vent covers that keep rain out when the vents are open, a bbq grill, and electric jack.
