Trailer accident

Not a Jayco...but could have been. Just a reminder to drive safe and not take chances when towing. . Warning; contains colourful language...

True. I am wondering if they caught a wind draft from the vehicle filming this event?

Driving way too fast. The truck was running 65, so he was running probably close to 75.

Wow. Scary stuff. I'd be surprised if no on got hurt on that one. Hopefully nothing serious.

I agree with Grumpy speed was definitely a factor in this case...

Wow! Passed the truck who was doing 68 at the time he hit the front bumper and that was an Excursion which I believe are a 2500 series vehicle.

Either way that was a bad wreck and my thoughts are with those involved.

Not the only issue here, but did you notice that the trailers in both videos had a cargo rack of some type extended off of the back bumper?

That was a 3/4 ton Excursion. He has a lot of crap, hangging off the back bumper, he might have been a bit nose light. I did not see his hitch, but I bet he did not have any sway control. Maybe not even a wdh.

I saw a combo today coming home from work, with about the same setup. No wdh, no sway control.

Earlier this year I was on a single lane highway. The second vehicle ahead of me was a 1/2 ton pulling a dual axle enclosed cargo trailer. The trailer started to fish tail, and quickly got worse. It started to violently fish tail from side to side. On coming traffic started to slow down and move to the shoulder. Me and the guy in front of me slowed right down to give this guy all the room he could get. I seriously thought the guy was about to lose it as wheels on the right side actually came off the ground by about 6 inches. Miraculously he got it stopped on the shoulder. As I drove by his trailer coupler was sitting on the crossed safety chains. I'm sure he thanked his lucky stars and then changed his underwear.

It looks like Speed and over weight were the factors in this crash. The insurance company no matter which one they all handle it the same. Investigate the crash including was the truck able to handle the weight if not no claim will be paid out. If it was speed they will pay out on the crash. Everyone be careful on this holiday weekend.

I’d like to hear opinions on what to do if/when your trailer starts to sway a bit? Foot off the gas? Brake? Pray?

Foot off the gas - Activate the TRAILER brakes via the controller's manual slide. Very small steering corrections. Its a good idea to practice reaching for the brake controller without looking just to "Train" yourself to be able to reach it quickly should it become necessary without taking your eyes off the road.

When we first took our Hybrid TT out of state, we almost lost it like the folks in the videos. Being our first large towable, I was green and trusted the RV salesman who told us, after we hooked up the the camper to our TV, that we didn't need a weight distribution hitch. He was wrong about that, but he did tell us that if the trailer starts to sway, don't hit the brakes, give it gas.

When it happened, stepping on the gas pedal is what saved our camper. I was doing 60 - 65 mph when I hit a pot hole. Quickly after, a tractor trailer passed and that caused the camper to start swaying. With hands tightly on the steering wheel and my foot steadily on the gas, I crossed back and forth between lanes. By the time I got it back under control, I was doing over 80 mph.

It was a divided highway so no worries with on coming traffic. Traffic behind me slowed and gave me room. When I finally got it under control, I pulled onto the shoulder to get myself together. My underwear stayed clean, but it was certainly a harrowing experience. My wife and kids were following me in a separate vehicle and got to watch it unfold.

As soon as we got home, we bought an Equal-i-zer hitch and went camping the next weekend.

Wow. Speeding up almost sounds counter-intuitive. Would never have considered doing that!
