trailer bumper hitch

On a 24 FTS, is the rear trailer bumper stout enough to take a bolt on hitch and carry some bikes or a cargo carrier? Have heard horror stories about the bumper collapsing with too much weight. I don't want to be driving down the highway dragging two bikes behind. Can you add brackets or other support if needed, or just stay away from the hitch idea altogether?

Consensus seems to be, the bumper as is will not support the weight. Our TT has the optional Jayco bike rack on the back, and it mounts onto the main frame rails of the TT, not the bumper. You could probably fabricate an attachment which would mount this way.

The bouncing will eventually stress and break the welds on the bumper. I would look into beefing up the welds with additional support or a hitch that is attached to the frame.

We wanted to add a hitch for our bikes too but were warned by the dealer that anything we do, either bumper or frame mount, could have an impact on the warranty as the bumper isn't designed to handle the weight and a frame mount is considered a modification.

I have seen a few TT bumpers stout enough for a hitch to be added. But very few. Our dealer accidently welded on a 2” receiver hitch to our unit before we signed the paperwork. This did not hurt my feelings at all. If I was going to add a hitch, I would bring the unit into a weld shop and have them erect one right to the frame.

I have dealt with this problem recently and this is what I have come up with.
I originally put a Swagman over the spare bike carrier on the back of my 24FBS and it
worked pretty good,(didn't use it but one time) The problem was, once you get to the campground you're
stuck at the camp with the bikes.

So... we went with a front mounted hitch on the TV, and a 4 bike rack, that let us set up the trailer,
and take the bikes on the locale bike trails, no worry's about how the bike rack was doing
on the back of the trailer.

Thanks all. I think I'll go with the front TV mount...then no TT bumper worries.

How many bikes? We put our bikes inside of the camper a bit of a pain and my son's in the back of the truck works out good and a lot cheaper. Looked into a front mount rack, about $300 for hitch and about $200 for a good quality rack
