Trailer hitch at camp site.

On my last couple of trips, I have seen people disconnect their trailer, D-bars, and then they remove their hitch!!?? My question is why? Am I missing something? Why do you want to take the hitch off and then have to put it back on in a few days. ( I understand about shin hits but other than someone not looking where you are going is there another reason?)

I only remove my bars when I am going to be traveling away from the campground. I usually leave the hitch attached. For my hitch, I cover it with a plastic bag so I don't waste a 5th pair of shorts - grease. I just bought some silicone clear grease for hitches that supposedly won't stain clothes, but I need to get the old grease off first.

for me its the length of time at that CG. if its more than a couple days, i pull it out. Most everything round bars, sway control and hitch can easily be stored just behind the propane tanks, so why not. It seems i access the back of my tahoe often while camping, its just one less thing to think about I guess. Part of it may be routine too...

I have a locking hitch pin, so I leave my WDH head attached when camping. My father-in-law removes his and stores it in the bed of his truck (he has a locking cap). I guess its personal choice. Personally, I choose to manhandle that heavy hitch as little as possible...

I would add that at $400., $500., or more for the hitch, there are still some people out there that would be more than happy to relieve you of it if you don't have a pin that locks.

I take my WD bars off, my hitch out and my "Ski-Doo" hitch cover back in.

Hitches are a huge shin-breaker and I wouldn't care to listen to my wife if she did it nor endure the aggravation if I did it. I also toss the hitch underneath my hybrid bunk to keep it rust free which is also a risk of keeping it in the truck. I see a lot of trailer hitches always left in and they're covered in rust and look horrible.

Comes down to personal preference I guess.

I remove ours if we are disconnecting the trailer (more than one night stays). I know for certain that I will hit my shin on it if I leave it in place. I cover the ball with a baggie and lock it in a storage compartment on the trailer with the wd bars. When we had a motorhome and towed a small pickup, I would remove that hitch from the receiver for the same reason as mentioned above. Just my .02 cents.

I remove mine and store it under the trailer if we are going to be in one spot for a few days. Out of sight, out of mind for any thieves hopefully. No problems yet. My truck is long enough as it is without that large piece of steel protruding from the rear.

Exactly!!! I just spent $500+ on an equalizer hitch. I have a locking pin for it. Whe we go to the beach or the store, I don't have to worry about it getting stolen. Unfortunately there are people out there want to make a quick buck at your expense.

My Blue Ox goes right in a plastic tote in the bed of my truck.

I take mine off too, mostly because we tow with a SUV and we are usually accessing the rear hatch. It only takes one time nailing it with your shin, or watching one of your kids run around the vehicle and get whacked. It's part of my setup routine every time.

Mine stays in at camp. Here at home, it is safely tucked in the garage. Locking pin and all.

Same here, but without the fancy hitch cover . I have an extended shank so leaving it on the truck is really not an option. It's a brute, but removing it saves shins.

I store it in the pass through in a plastic tub that my wood leveling blocks and stabilizer pads travel in.

1. Theft
2. Sore shin
3. Grease. You can't avoid it if it is within 10 feet of you will get some on you
4. Truck length, I don't need any more.

Ditto!! Always good for a shin kick if left on the truck. Anyway, why not? Takes maybe 3 min to remove and stow under the TT. Always appreciate it when fellow RV'ers remove theirs when they go to the grocery or various parking lots as the rest of us can crack a shin on your TV just as easy as our own. Its a real hazard for those of us who suffer from senioridous.

I take mine off if we are going to leave the campground because the trucks back up camera see it and goes to beeping, then it send another message when going forward. I have a extra safety chain to lock by bars to the trailer, and the head if I remove it .

We take ours off, also. Ditto on the shins, greasy pants. The worst is the dog, who continuously gets greased up. We put a ball cover on it, and put it in the back of the truck, or under the trailer tongue if not going far.

When we had our JayFlight we often didn't unhook at all if the camp sight was long enough. If we needed to use the truck, we took the hitch off, as in some states its illegal to leave it on. We got a warning from a State Police officer (who as very nice about it). We asked why the law, and he said that in case of a rear end collision, the hitch does a tremendous amount of damage to the vehicle that hits it. It also can shove the entire hitch assembly forward on your vehicle, slamming into parts which don't do well under that kind of abuse. :-)

I had never really thought about it until it was explained to me.
