Trailer truck sway much better

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to share what solved my tremendous sway problems with by truck and trailer. Trailer vehicle is an expedition with auto tow leveling package and weight dist hitch with sway control pulling a used 27 foot travel trailer. Also, I am with weight limits and had a downward TT tilt. First time towing a TT last year. I spent a tremendous amount of time weighting coupled uncoupled, sway bars on/off, etc, at cat scales, tongue weight gauge, redistribution of gear etc., leveling etc., setup the hitch from scratch, performed the vehicle leveling procedure nothing worked well. The combo swayed alot more than I believed it should. Before heading home for a 1300 mile trip. I took another try…I believe the trailer coupler height was causing the trailer to ride fairly level. I had the 10-12% tongue weight and it measured a slight downward travel trailer angle towards the truck. I had one more hole in the hitch and was able to lower the ball about 1.5” and took a shot and made a short trip. Omgosh what a difference drove home with almost no sway, incredible and smooth drive. Even when tractors were passing or I was passing them, no concern, had gusts as well. I was white knuckling before in comparison. Something is off and I inspected the frame and it is solid. Might be the auto leveling but not sure. Also Thinking it might have been jacked up/forced with rear stabilization gear down… anyways increasing the downward TT tilt did it and it was simply a pleasure to drive. Now I am planning to perform a precise measurement day to determine what’s going on and enjoy.

A friend towed with a Nissan SUV equipped with an auto level system. He disliked it so much, he traded for a pickup. he seemed to think the WDH and auto level were fighting each other. It made the kids sick in the back seat.

Tire Jack mode

I have a 2019 Ram 1500 and an Eagle TT. My Ram has the auto leveling system in it which works quite well once everything is setup.

But, for hooking and unhooking the trailer (and setting up/taking out the sway bars) I need to put the truck into Jack mode where it disables the auto leveling system. I also need to do this if I need to change a tire on the truck. There might be a similar mode on your vehicle.
