Travel Trailer to Chicago...???

I just bought my first TT, and we are looking to attend a Cubs game at Wrigley field in Chicago. Does anyone have any experience with camping in the vicinity of Wrigley field or camping near public transportation into the city? I would like to take my TT.

Indiana dunes state park in Chesterton IN is a nice place to stay on Lake Michigan. There is a train station just south of the park. I believe it's about 45 minutes into Chicago from that station.

It is definetly longer than 45 min. About an hour to downtown the. You will need to change train stations. It is doable but will take some time

OK sounds like a plan. Does anyone know how late the train leaves Chicago to get back to the dunes?

Here is some info that may help.

The Southshore Line train station is just outside the entrance to the park, , and was a great way to get into town. It was an hour ride into Millenium Park, then a 2 block walk to the red line that drops you off right outside Wrigley Field at the Addison stop. Couldn't be easier.

You won't find too many places for parking your TT that will be "near" Wrigley Field.

However, one option might be to stay in a nearby hotel and park your TT in the hotel parking lot. I realize that this defeats the entire reason for wanting to take your TT to Wrigley Field, but maybe this allows you to have a "nearby" tail-gate before or after the game.

Another option might be to camp at Illinois Beach State Park (located near Zion, IL on Lake Michigan; north of Wrigley Field). See DNR. Reservations can be made on-line at Campgrounds and Camping Reservations - ReserveAmerica

If you stay at Illinois Beach State Park, one way to get to Wrigley Field would be to take the MetraRail (Metra Union Pacific North) and transfer to the Chicago Transit PURPLE train, which will take you to Wrigley. See links below for routes/schedules.

1. Depart at Zion, IL MetraRail Station.

2. Exit MetraRail at Evanston DAVIS Street.

3. Transfer to Chicago Transit PURPLE train at DAVIS

NOTE: the PURPLE train will take you to Wrigley only on WEEKDAYS. For weekend games, you'll need to transfer from the PURPLE train to the RED train at Howard Ave Station.

I am originally from Chicago and the ONLY RV overnight location in the city of Chicago (as far as I know) is Marshalling Yard by McCormick Place. I believe they are still allowing overnight parking. DW and I were going to stay there a few nights this summer and visit my daughter, who lives in downtown Chicago. It is run by the city of Chicago ($30/night?) and has 24/7 security, a lot of over the road truckers use it for overnight stays. Sometimes there are a lot of RV's there sometimes there are not. I believe it had a 100 or so spots. No hookups..

As for getting from Marshalling Yard to Wrigley field, I would take a taxi from there to a "RED" line "L" stop in DOWNTOWN Chicago . Take the "RED" line north to Wrigley field. It is about a 20 min ride from downtown the "LOOP".

On the way back get off at one of the downtown Chicago stops and take a taxi back to your RV

This is the SAFEST way of doing it. If you decide to go this route, send me a PM and I will fill you in on the "L" stations and anything else you need to know.

You could go to Wrigley in October. You'll be able to park at the front door.

The advice for IN Dunes State Park is spot on. It is close to the South Shore light rail that you can take to Randolph St. station and then take the EL to Wrigley. The website for the South Shore railroad schedule is Convenient Train Service to Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

I grew up there however left to go to college before I did any camping. If you find a place near an el station you can take it right to Wrigley Field and walk to stadium.
