TT Brake Controller: 8% Grade
Starting a trip tomorrow and there are some 8% grades. Do you assist braking downhill using the manual button on the brake controller. T

I don't. I shift to a lower gear and interval braking. Get your speed down starting at the top of the grade and when it starts to climb apply the brakes to bring it down using both vehicles.

When towing downhill start off slow at the top and make sure the TV is in Tow mode. With a TV in that mode a touch of the brake should drop a gear to use the engine as a brake. Then touching the manual lever intermittently will keep your rig straight downhill.
Should it feel like it's getting too fast then apply TV brakes with a full manual assist. Your main concern is heat on both TV and TT braking systems.
Usually a every tap or short burst of braking will lead to a further downshift of the TV tranny when in tow mode.

In the mountains I control the shifting manually. As a rule of thumb; gear up is gear down. Find your own comfort and don't be in a hurry to get down even if you are behind a Semi. The engine is your best brake, you don't want to burn your regular brakes, you use them sparingly and short brakes are the best.

We don't have to use the brake controller for extra braking but I always give my wife a heads up. She knows to use the brake controller handle if I call for it.
we have even practiced to make sure she can reach it. At the point we would need it I don't want to take my hands off the wheel!
She will also reach over and give it a twitch to make sure brakes are working when we take off in the morning.
Don't want to find out no brakes after we are committed.

I don't think using the manual slide should be a normal part of your planning, no matter how steep the grade. Use transmission, and as mentioned, start slow at the top, so you aren't scrubbing as much speed all the way down.

Scouting taught me Be Prepared. If all else fails we are ready. Never had to use the lever, never want to.

Occasionally I do. If it’s been awhile since I’ve needed the brakes I will warm them up with the manual button.

It's not recommended to use the slider, you add another 7000 lbs. truck to your electric trailer brakes.
