HELP advice on Used vs New Travel trailer

Need advice???

We have 3 Jayo BH to choose from, thought we would get all you experienced folks to chime in on which one would be best bang for our buck??

Here’s the choices:
NEW 2019 BHDS (LOADED-except skylight)@$29,897 (if I want to add Blue Ox hitch & back up cam he will add all that for price @ 30,888-product & installed)

USED 2017 BHDS (SAME as 2019 except HAS skylights) ** I know the original owner, a nurse manager who bought RV last year, lived in while home was being built.** Offered to sell me @ $23k

NEW 2018 SLX 324 BDS (Pretty basic, with not a lot of added features) @ $25,503

OK those are the choices, thank you all for your opinions & help!!!

The great thing about a used is that they have worked out all the initial bugs and issues that all RVs come with. It's hard to beat the used if it has all you want and you know the owner. The new will be worth that same price as soon as you drag it off the lot.

I'm not sure if the price on the new one that you showed to be just north of $30,000 with the hitch has been discounted from retail pricing. There was a recent thread here concerning actual price verses MSRP. It was mutually agreed from most of those who posted to expect or anticipate getting about 30-33% off of the MSRP. Using that figure, I'm not sure where that would put your new 2019 without the skylight verses the used 2017.

I picked up a brand new leftover 2016 from a dealer last year in 2018. He gave me 40% of MSRP. You may want to keep looking if you're willing to wait and don't mind driving. Mine was 140 miles away in Southern Michigan. That said, there will be those who say stay local to purchase to get better service from the local dealer you purchased from.

Might be able to get some better prices on last year's models. I see the new ones showing up on the lots around here and I'm betting they want to move the old stock

What exactly is "LOADED (except skylight)" on the 2019? I looked at the dealer's ad and it says nothing. I'm assuming 50 amp service and 2 AC units? You'll need that. Also, I saw on a different thread you're pulling with a Toyota Tundra. That's a mighty big trailer for a half-ton truck, and since you're looking exclusively at bunkhouse models I'm going to go ahead and assume you have kids. Better check out your available payload sticker and while you're at it crawl under the hitch to see what it's rated for. Even if you pack light you're going to be going down the highway at over 9000 lbs. That puts your tongue weight at around 1100 lbs. plus propane plus battery plus the weight of the WDH. I would guess you'd have somewhere around 1300 lbs. give or take on the rearend of that truck. Man that's a lot, and it doesn't leave much room for you and the wife and kids (thinking your payload is probably in the 1600 range) unless you're all really skinny. I mean, it's your truck and your money but that is a BIG trailer.

I will say the price of the 30k one is with them adding solid doors for us. So it bumps up the price some.

And more weight. Check your cargo capacity on the drivers door jamb...on the yellow sticker. That will tell you your answer.. Towing capacity means almost nothing, cargo capacity almost always is your limiting factor. That number is for the vehicle as built with a 150 lb driver. Anything you add after that is deducted from your cargo capacity...ie hitch, etc.

As a Tundra owner, I love my truck but would not even think of pulling a 5er with it. Your 4 X 4 also will lower your cargo capacity. I bet your cargo capacity will be 1500 or lower. Also if you have a crew cab that will lower cargo capacity, same as double cab...

It's a trailer wags - Jay Flight 32BHDS if I'm not mistaken. Fifth wheel would be way out of the question but the BHDS is a very big and heavy trailer...very big.

When you say 5er, do you mean 5th wheel? All of these are travel trailers none are fifth wheels. The truck is a 4 door and does have 4x4 tow package.

Yep he has another post this morning, regarding wanting to get a 5er.. Mixed em up.. I have a 27RLS and no 4 X 4 and a rather high cargo capacity for a Tundra...and only 2 of us. Would not want to tow anything larger with a Tundra, as much as I love ours.

Check the yellow sticker on the drivers door jamb.. it will answer your questions as to what you can tow...larger the cab, more it weights and less cargo capacity you have, same with 4 wheel drive. It adds weight which limits your cargo capacity. Just because you can drag something down the road, doesn't mean it will be safe and not put undue stress on your vehicles components. It's why they give you the cargo capacity, which is what you will run out of long before towing capacity.

I have a 2012 4x4 Crewmax (full four door) and the payload is just under 1,400 pounds. That a lot of trailer for that truck. I have just over 700 pounds of tongue weight with my trailer and another 500 or so in passenger weight. After cresting over 1,200 pounds, I know I'm good for 150 to 200 pounds of cargo space. The tow rating is 9,000 pounds.

I have the 2017 Starcraft version of this trailer (329BHU). I wouldn’t even think of pulling this hog with a 1/2 ton. Very very heavy on the tongue. Most 1/2 ton truck hitches are rated at 1,000lbs. These trailers are every bit of 1200-1300. 1/2 ton may tow fine on flat land...but good luck on hills, crosswinds and emergency stopping.

Good luck in your decision.

I think for the price difference, I'd go with your friends trailer. It's the same as the new one, way cheaper, and you can trust the person selling it.

I think I'd be shopping for a larger tow vehicle before deciding on any of the three. That is WAY too much for a half ton. I am firmly at MY personal limit on my setup with real world wiggle room driving a pickup with 2,000 lbs more capacity than the Tundra and pulling a trailer with 2,000 lbs less max weight with cargo. You'd have to pry my hands off the wheel after a trip, I think. Do some real research on your towing capacities and payload.

FWIW, I pulled a similarly sized trailer (Flagstaff V lite, 35' at about 9,000 lbs loaded) with a similarly rated truck (Titan). The truck was a beast and I loved it. I pulled that trailer at least 15,000 miles including trips to the Grand Canyon, Colorado, Mount Rushmore, Big Bend, and all over Texas (all from the Dallas area). I had to pick the gears to keep the transmission from shifting too much when in hills and mountains and my range was about 150 miles on a tank of gas...less if there was much of a head wind. Braking was OK, but had to be planned in advance. Also, I had to add air springs to the back to manage the load. And this was with a ProPride 1400 hitch.

If I had it to do over again, I would pick a smaller trailer or buy a bigger truck, first. Pulling the big trailer is SO easy with my GMC 2500 diesel...cruise control through Colorado, 300+ miles of range while towing, more braking control, etc. I'm sure the RAM and Ford 3/4- and 1-ton diesel trucks are the same.

Good luck.

To OP, you are getting suckered if you pay those prices.

The RV industry is very weird in terms of Retail vs. selling price.

I got a brand new Eagle 314BHDS listed at 47k retail and the dealer sold it for 30k. The Eagle is a nice step above those models you've shown.

Take the sticker price and start at chopping 33% off to start.

I will add that a 3/4 ton truck is way better for the 32BHDS. See the picture I am including here, this is my 2003 F250 with camper package. I am moving the trailer from the water hose area back to its parking spot. When I am just moving around the storage yard I don't use the WDH setup on it. The camper package on this year f250 is basically the same as the f350 SRW suspension package (an extra leaf in front and back plus helpers in the rear), notice the amount of squat in the rear of the truck and the nose down of the trailer, that is a lot of weight on a very heavy duty suspension setup.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/lanx6z4ss1..._5396.JPG?dl=0

Disclaimer, I only use no WDH at low speed in the storage yard anywhere else I will have the WDH on.

But is it half ton, 3/4 ton, and, regardless, what's your truck's cargo capacity? As others here have already mentioned, that will be your limiting factor for what you can safely tow. Many half ton 4x4 trucks only have 1500 lb, or maybe even lower, cargo capacities, and just the tongue weight of the trailer could use up 2/3 to 3/4 of that. I got the extra payload capacity on my F150, but it only gets my cargo capacity to 1776 lbs, and I am stretched close to limits towing a max-loaded 7500 lb SLX 267BHSW with a 180 lb camper shell, 3 adults and some tools and gear in the truck. I have about 2000 lbs of "max towing capacity" left, but almost no "cargo capacity" left. So advice is be careful so you don't end up with a rig you can't legally tow. Hope this helps.
