We camp with no hookups most of the time.
I've also seen someone lose their water tank on the interstate @ 65mph after hitting a pothole. The brackets supporting these tanks aren't as stout as they should be.
We fill our tanks as close to our camp spot as we can. If I'm going to be towing an extra 300+ pounds around, I'd rather take my father in law than a bunch of dead weight.

We generally don't travel with fresh water in the tanks unless its a short trip. I've literally had to pull over on the open highway and go. Bottled water is a plus for quick flushes. Don't be afraid to "Dry dock" one in a pinch (Pun intended) if you have to. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!! You can always properly flush and rinse when you get to your next destination.

Non-full hook up days were when younger and it the pop up, Bought the TT so we could have our own "facilities" and spent too many years in the Navy to worry about having to take Navy showers. Stopping every 1 - 2 hours for potty break I think the gallon jugs is the best solution for me.
Bansai you have to take your show on the road on the dead weight comment still LMAO

I never travel with less than 1/3 FWT which equals to about 13-14 gallons. And that's if I know I will be staying at a private RV CG.
If I were going to a state/Federal park or boondocking, I'm carrying a full FWT which is 40 gallons.
My current trailer is a Koala 21CS, which I'm trying to sell. It has 40 gal fresh, gray, and black tanks.
If I get my preferred replacement, a J Flight 23RB with 80+ gallon tank, even going to state/Federal or boondocking, I doubt I would carry that much water.

I'd rather carry the water, or beer, or cast iron, or rocks ... all infinitely more useful.

But if I carry the beer that means I DEFINATELY would need a few more stops and might not get out of the driveway.

Alright, you guys win this one lol. He drinks all my booze and stinks up the place with his semi-hourly 'potty breaks' anyways.
We did get a new dog a few months ago, I'll just take him instead. He likes to poop outside almost as much as I do.

So you're taking all the carpet out of your trailer then? For easy cleanup?
Dog is WAY better company (even if he makes on the floor) than FIL! Only upside is he doesn't drink, so at least my booze would be safe. From him at least. I might need to drink more of it...

When I go boondocking and camp within 40 miles of my house, I will fill the water tank By the way, my tank holds 80 gallons. When I travel and I know My family will want to use trailer pottie, I will put in about 15 -20 gallons. That is enough to use in the pottie, wash hands and do dishes while on the road.

we have a 20 gal FWT. its usually got something in it.
If we are hauling water in a jug ( as we are doing enroute south in freezing weather) we just pee, put the tp in a baggie in the wastebasket and flush with a little water. There already is antifreeze in the tank..

Line the bottom and sides of the bowl with toilet paper and it reduces the "residue".
FWIW, the toilet bowl in our trailer holds approximately 1 gallon. So if I want to put three gallons of fresh water in the tank, I just fill and flush the toilet three times.
Since most of our trips are within an hour or two of home, we don't bother filling the tank unless it's to one particular campground which is literally half an hour from our front door; this place has power but no water on the sites, and it's just easier to fill up at home.

I found many sites out here where water can be quite a hike to just the faucet while in the campground. Then we switched to running a full tank before leaving the house (for us 47 gallons). Found that the whole package performed better, we had water for ALL of our needs when we stopped. Eventually dropped to a 1/3 of a tank with no ill effects. Did not suffer fuel economy or performance.
All that extra weight, is justification to leave the mother-in-law behind

My manual says not to travel with water in the tanks. But I'm sure people don't obey that.

I carry a full water tank, when we are on the road, we have access to the kitchen and washroom. It came in handy when we were stuck on the highway due to a car accident.:

I travel with around a half tank, it holds 90gals. But it depends (hmmm "Depends", that's another option), on if there is a place to top off or not, at or near where I'm going.
I stop and make meals on the road, always need water for cooking and cleaning up.

I agree. My brother-in-law has been RVing for years and he said that if you bring a couple of gallons jugs with you ,you can simply pour some water in your toilet, do your business and flush it. Even initially you could pour a gallon or two down there with chemicals. By the time it gets to a point where you need to dump it, it will be full.
I can totally see how the sloshing around would be difficult sometimes like people have mentioned. I guess there are pros and cons to larger tanks. We have a puny little 9 gallon black water tank. So I definitely know that this is not going to cause a lot of sway issues while we drive if we do our business in there for a couple of days until we get to our destination. I imagine a larger tank would be a lot different. But I definitely agree you don't have to have water in your freshwater tank as long as you're using jugs of water to pour down the toilet. I know I'm a newbie here but I think this is a good logic.
