Water Heater usage

i will be staying at park for the next 3-4 months and i have a question about the water heater and usage. is it harder on the electric element to turn it on only when needed (in the evenings for a few hours for shower and dishes) and then shutting it off for the night or leaving it on 24/7 for the next 3-4 months?

thanks,

doug

We leave ours on 24/7. We have been doing that since we had our first gas/elec water heater in a 5th wheel over 20 years ago. The element is no different than what you have at home if you have an elec water heater.

X2. We leave ours on all the time. Thermostat shuts it off when temp reaches hot, on again when necessary. No problems.

My water heater runs 24/7 and has for the past 2 1/2 years. No problems at all except the propane thermostat failed and had to be replaced. My unit has two thermostats, one for propane operation and the other for electric.

Ed, I'm not familiar with electric water hearters. Do you have two thermostats because each mode needs its own?

Just remember to check/ replace your anode as needed if it is a Suburban WH. They should last about a year, depending on usage and type water.

I keep a spare on hand and it is a easy maint. item to complete.

Water Heater usage

Keep ours on 24/7 also!!
Then turn on the gas when needing to take back to back showers!

Suburban water heaters that work on both electric and propane have two thermostats on the unit itself. When you select electric operation from the panel inside the trailer the electric thermostat on the unit is the one that works. When you select propane operation the other one controls the heater. My propane thermostat failed a few weeks back and it is very easy to replace.

Speaking of the anode, here are two pictures of my anode after it was replaced. I checked this anode after 12 months of fulltime use and it was hardly eroded at all and I put it back in. These pictures were taken after 30 months fulltime use. This one now lives in the land fill.

Is this pretty much the standard strategy...turn back to gas during times of high usage?

I have the 12 gallon Suburban. We keep it on electric. We have never ran out of hw. Just 2 of us.

Note: My wife knows how to shower the navy way, unlike most women.

We run our 10 gal Atwood 24/7 as well. We also turn the gas on when multiple showers taken. Recovery is 10 times faster. Also, don't forget to flush it at least once a year to remove lime deposits.

It's standard for us. I take Navy showers and the Mrs. doesn't. I always have plenty of hot water, but we'll flip on the gas if showers have to be back-to-back.
