WDH Question
I need to get a new WDH for the new trailer. My question is, What is a good safety margin for the spring bars?
I weighted my trailer on a CAT scale and also a Shurline and they were very close CAT = 1330 and the Shurline = 1300.
I looking at the Blue Ox sway pro since i think i like the way the chains are adjusted. I currently have a Husky TS (which is not enough, 1200 lbs) and find it difficult to get the spring bars hooked especially if the trailer and truck not completely level ground. Doing the 3 steps at the local CAT scale was herculean effort. Also have to raise back of truck quite a bit to facilitate the process. I am thinking with a good long breaker bar it might be less and easier an effort with the Blue Ox.
Suggestion welcome.
But to my original question which would be better the 1500 bars or the 2000?
How big a margin do i need for safety?
Is the 2000 overkill?
Thanks
Chuck

IMO, yes, the 2000 is 'overkill'.
I'm sure you'll hear from others with the Blue Ox hitch.

Based on everything I've read on the subjection if the trailer is 1,300 or so you would want to go with 1500. The 2000 would be too rigid and result in a stiff ride.

Agreed. For example, I contacted them about my 980lb of tongue weight and they said stick with the 1000 lb bars.
Your issue with getting them connected is another story. I always raise mine quite a bit to take the pressure off. The pent up energy is to be taken seriously.

Chuck,
Your 306RKDS Eagle has a GVWR of 9,950lbs...., so 'worst case scenario' loaded to the GVWR an ideal loaded tongue weight range would be 1,294lbs - 1,493lbs (13% - 15& of gross), thus the 1,500lb rate WDH properly adjusted would be a good match for the 306RKDS and your scaled 1,300lbs.

Remember that it is a spring bar. Too much makes the connection between TV and trailer stiff, too little makes it not able to distribute enough weight to front of TV.

In your case I'm sure the 1500 Lb bars would be perfect. If in doubt, call Blue Ox's customer service. Before purchasing my new TT (Eagle HT 314BHDS)a few months ago, I was doing research and decided on the Blue Ox. I wanted a 2 1/2" shank and wasn't sure whether to buy the 1500 Lb setup and they would swap to a larger shank or go with the 2000 Lb setup which came with the larger shank. Anyway, I called Blue Ox customer service and they assured me that with the upper end of my tongue weight possibly reaching 1500 Lbs, they recommended going with the larger bars. Instead of hooking the chains to the recommended 9th link (starting point in the instructions), I hook them up to the 8th link. The ride is smooth and no sway. If I use the 9th link the ride is harsh and bouncy. Remember, you can make small adjustments with the chain length if the tongue weight changes. I highly recommend the Blue Ox FWIW.

Agree with 1500. I had a Blue Ox on another tt but got an Equaliser for the Eagle. I find it easier to hook up and unhook, but bars are only 1400 pounds.

Could you comment on the differences you found between the Blue Ox and Equalizer? I am trying to decide on a new hitch for a 24RBS and plan to tow with a Silverado 2500 4WD. Thanks.

I like the blue ox but let it go with the trailer I purchased it for. I was not a huge fan of the chains, so after having a bad experience with one of the fancy overpriced, in my opinion, hitches, I chose a brand similar to the Equalizer. But it wouldn't work with Jaycos coupler. I was offered the Equalizer and went with the Equalizer.. If I were to do it all over again I would stick with the equalizer, although I would prefer 1500# bars being available. When I got mine 4 or 5 years ago the max was 1400 and I'm always over weight . But it's not been a problem. They are probably over engineered to an extent.

I have an Equal-i-Zer with 1400 lb bars. The tongue on our trailer is 1300. The setup works very well over thousands of miles.

I just purchased an Equalizer 1k/10k for my new 24rbs, TV is an F150 Max Tow with 3.5EB and am very happy with the setup. Narrowed my options to the Equalizer and Blue Ox. Went with the Equalizer based on reduced overall weight of hitch. Found both to be highly rated.

Dmrey,
Welcome to JOF
Now that you have a new 24RBS, time to start thinking about MODS
