weight distribution & anti sway

Looking for some advice on what is the best weight distribution and anti-sway systems out there. We have a Jayco Jay Flight 28 BHBE, it came with a weight distribution system but I am certain there are better on the market. We haul with a Ford F250, 6.2L gas engine

Thanx for any input

So...

How much money are you prepared to spend?

There's OK (cheapest), good (more $$$), and superb (big $$$). You could spend anywhere from $250 to $1500 or even $2000. Husky and Eaz-Lift have models down in the $250 range; Andersen, Blue Ox and Equal-i-zer are often $500-600; and then there's top of the line stuff like Hensley that can run to $2000 or more. There are other names, and many mfgrs have a variety of models in various price/quality ranges.

I'm quite content with my Husky, but if I could do it over again I'd go for a more expensive option. My son has an Equal-i-zer, and he can hitch/unhitch in less than half the time it takes me. And he's got a bigger trailer!

Roger

P.S. Lots of threads here, the topic gets discussed to death. Just search on WDH.

JARanch,

Welcome to JOF

Do you know the brand, model, and weight rating of the WDH system that came with your 28BHBE?

Bob

it's an EZ Hitch, max tongue weight 1,000lbs, max trailer weight 10,000lbs. Our Jay flight is below those ratings. Since this one came with the unit I am certain the dealer "gives" you the cheapest one he can just to say he has "given" you and extra deal with your purchase.

You have a 3/4 ton truck and your WDH is adequate enough. Why waist more money on overrated and very costly systems? As long you have sway control on your WDH you should be fine. Speed and improper load distribution is the biggest problem for sway.

So reading through this I would have to assume you currently have a sway or some other issue. Correct? (Why else would you want to spend money. Certainly not to fix an non-extant problem.)

Could you post what problem(s) you are trying to correct. We may be able to help without having you spend lots of $$$.

And welcome to the forum. Like rkresge said, this topic has been discussed often on this site so sit back with the beverage of your choice and use the search function. You may find answers to questions you didn't know you had.

Are you in Lytle, TX?

If so, I have a Blue Ox I'll sell you. I used it on my own 28BHBE that I towed with a Ram 2500 gasser. Great hitch and I only had it a short time, so it's pretty gently used. SUPER easy to install/set up. We traded into a motorhome, so I don't need the hitch anymore.

I also have it on a pretty deep drop shank if your truck is tall; mine was.

PM me if you're interested.

ETA: I see you are in Lytle, TX. Let me know and we can put a deal together if you want.

Thanks for the feedback.

Your 28BHBE has a GVWR around 9,200lbs, thus depending on your loading habits it's not uncommon to have a loaded tongue weight above 1,000lbs with a 28BHBE..., which would exceed your present Eaz-Lift WDH rating. Your F-250 is an ideal TV for the 28BHBE.

JOF member's 28BHBE loaded 1,200lb tongue weight, post#12 here:

https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...t-57188-5.html

I would recommend a CAT scale visit under TV/TT loaded conditions (full fuel, passengers, cargo, etc.) thus confirming your weights, "loaded tongue weight", and present WDH rating/adjustment. If you normally travel with fresh water in your tank, fill prior to the CAT visit.

CAT Scale how-to: https://www.jaycoowners.com/forums/f...v-tt-3871.html

IMO if your "scaled" loaded tongue weight exceeds 1,000lbs, and/or your just looking to upgrade from your present conventional WDH....., I would look at a properly rated Equal-i-zer WDH brand or a Reese Strait-Line brand/model WDH...., both have enhanced "integrated" sway control.

A WDH with integrated sway control offers increased sway control performance over a conventional WDH w/manual friction sway control arm...., especially with the heavier/longer TT's like the 28BHBE.

In the case of conventional WDH's utilizing a manual friction sway control arm, WDH manufactures recommend two (2) sway control arms on TT's 25ft and longer.

My dealer installed a Fastway e2 hitch with sway control on my TT when I bought it last week. Before I had the 195RB without a WDH but trading up to the 212QB I knew I needed one. It was short drive home but I could tell a big difference when hitting bridges, a much smoother and stable ride. I'm new to this and took their advice on the hitch.

ALJO X2 but do check the tongue weight. Having the right tow vehicle is key and you're good there.

Following. I have the same truck/TT combo. My Jayco dealer insisted the Fastway E2 10k square bar hitch I used on our old 26BH would work with the 28BHBE. I have only pulled the new TT from the dealer to the storage lot so I have no feedback on how it's doing with sway. I'll have to get it to a scale when it's loaded to check the tongue weight.

My setup is very similar to yours (same WDH and just a bit smaller TT) and I have no issues with sway nor anything else. As long as your tongue weight is under your 1000 lbs, I am guessing you will be fine. As stated earlier, CAT Scales will tell you the real numbers.

Have a Jayflight 28RLS I was towing with a Durango 5.7 hemi with a 10k towing package, a weight distributing hitch and had some sway with semi's passing me. I got a 2500HD and the Equalizer weight distributing/anti-sway hitch and have had no problems with sway.

Here is a video of moving the weight on a trailer...

Which Equalizer model WDH do you have? I have the E2 rated at 1000/10,000 and trying to figure out if it will be big enough for a 34' White Hawk 29BH with 730 HW, 6820 dry weight and GVWR of 8500.

I'm 6340 dry, GVWR 8750, I run about 7500-8000 (forgot my tongue weight, but was OK.

I think we're running the same hitch (different bars), I'm Equalizer 1200/12000. 4 point sway control. SKU: 90-00-1200

I contacted Equalizer (I've had great customer service so far) a couple of weeks ago about my new cargo trailer and getting 6K bars and new trailer brackets. He said just get the brackets $78. each and running the 1200/12000 bars would be no problem with the lighter trailer, just not going the other way and exceeding the limits, providing the hitch head heights line up, otherwise I might have to adjust the head height. Being to lazy l decided to get another hitch, and just so happens a guy here was selling one with 6K bars with pole tongue adapter for $150. He used it to tow his boat. I now have 2 Equalizer hitches.
