Weight Distribution Hitch for Jayco 26BH

We are buying a Jayco Flight 26 BH and was wondering which WD hitch to buy. I am planning on a Equalizer 4 Point and do not know what size to get. Just wondering what loaded tongue and trailer weights you guys experience with this trailer. I will be pulling it with a GMC Sierra Crew Cab with trailer package, 5.3 engine. Truck is rated at 6,800 hundred pounds towing. Any help would be appreciated.

If you have an order in the system, you could call the dealer up or stop in. On the tongue (curbside) there is a sticker that has the maximum recommended WDH size. My recommendation is to purchase the largest recommended size. This will then allow you to upgrade to a larger TT in the future and minimize the need for a new WDH.

Welcome to the forum! More then likely 1,000 lb spring bars would cover you and not be overkill.

Is that sticker on the tongue something that is new? There is no such sticker on my TT, but its a 2010.

I think that sticker must be on light weight TT frames. My 2012 26BH doesn't have it either.

OP, I use Husky CenterLine with 1200lb Trunion Bars. Really like hitch, although I too initially wanted the Equalizer but my dealer wasn't a distributor for them and we included the hitch as part of the transaction.

Thewild59,

Welcome to JOF

Just food for thought.., your TV's published Tow Rating of 6,800lbs isn't reflective of the "actual" tow rating. The following JOF thread will shed a little light on the subject: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...uot-Tow-Rating

The following may be a little more information than you need, but may provide a little insight on sizing a WDH......,

For now we will assume an actual TV Tow Rating" of 6,500lbs. The 2013 26BH has a GVWR of 7,500lbs (UVW 4,570lbs) and exceeds your TV's actual Tow Rating of 6,500lbs (even the published 6,800lbs). So it all comes down to your TT loading habits, to be mindful that you can't load the TT above your TV's actual Tow Rating.

Ideally the loaded tongue weight for a 29 feet long TT would be 13% to 15% of the loaded TT weight.

For example, IMO this would be a conservative family loaded condition for a 26BH of: (UVW 4,570lbs) + (350lbs Ship Weight delta) + (125 lbs battery/WDH/dealer misc.) + (600lbs TT cargo, no fluids) = 5,645lbs....., thus a loaded tongue weight range of 734lbs to 847lbs..... so a WDH rated at 1,000lbs would be ideal and also provide a little cushion.

If you loaded the 26BH up to our assumed actual TV Tow Rating of 6,500lbs the loaded tongue weight range would be 845lbs to 975lbs.... so the WDH rated at 1,000lbs would do the job as well.

Also, please note that the loaded TT tongue weight is subtracted from your TV's payload capacity.

Once you have your TV/TT loaded and ready for camping, a brief visit to your local CAT Scale will provide you with a wealth of information, thus confirming that your TT weights don't exceed your TV's weight limits.

CAT Scale how to: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...igh-Your-tt-tv

Your correct..., a number of the smaller Jayco lite-weight models have a maximum WDH weight rating warning sticker placed on the TT's or HTT's A-frame near the coupler.

Not sure if it is only on the lighter weight TTs. We have it on ours, and I have seen the sticker on a number of TTs but have never paided attention to what types of TTs they were.

I have the Equalizer 10,000lb hitch (part 90-00-1000) that I use to tow my 24FBS. Very good hitch and I have no complaints about it. It's a solid bugger!

We use the Equal-i-zer 12000 on our Jayfeather Select 28U. It is a little tongue heavy. Units are level. Good ride. No sway. Very happy.

I have a 2011 Jayco 26BH and previously towed it with a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500 Crew Cab 4x4 with 5.3 and 3.73. I have the Equal-i-zer 1000/10000 hitch. Make sure you bring it to a scale and get it set up right. We towed it out west to Yellowstone with the dealer settings, kind of a handful. The beginning of the next camping season I spent a few hours at the scales and dialing it in, what a difference. That being said, I loved my GMC but it was lacking for towing this trailer IMHO. We traded to a 2011 Silverado 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4 6.0 3.73. What a difference, the 2500HD is a much more capable rig for us, family of 4 including two older teenagers and a golden retriever. Good luck with your decision but as stated, make sure to spend some time dialing everything in having both truck and trailer loaded as you would when going camping.

I agree completely with the importance of proper setup. It makes a big difference. The dealer where we bought our trailer did not sell Equal-i-zer so I purchased it through a truck accessory shop and installed it myself to the default settings from the company. It was not bad but after readjusting a couple of times paying attention to weight on how level the units are made a huge difference.

Buying and installing myself saved several hundred dollars and I am very clear on how the unit works and is set up.

I use the Equal-i-zer 4 point 1000/10000 with my Jayco 26BH. It does the quite well. Just follow like everyone else has said regarding the proper set-up, watch your weight limits and you should be fine.
