I wouldnt have thought about the smoke detectors draining a battery. So I too shall install a disconnect before it happens to me.
As for batteries, flame me if you will, but I have run all 3 Optimas, Yellow in 4 trucks with lots of lights (brighter than I am) Blue in two boats and a Red in a car. All have out lasted previous batteries without leakage or issues.
