Where to put the spare?

Hey gang, I have a 2017 Jayflight 28BHBE. It came with the spare mounted on the rear bumper. I just installed a rear 2" receiver (official Jayco parts) and plugged in a RV approved Swagman platform bicycle rack. Unfortunately the wheel tray and the spare didn't get along and I had to remove the spare rack. I tried moving it to the side but still won't clear.

So my question is to those of you who have TT and rear hitch bicycle racks. Where do you put your spare?

Can you mount it under the A frame below the battery box and propane tanks?

On my old BHBE, I just moved the spare tire holder further over. It partially (Not completely) blocked the license plate from being visible, but I was going to blame it on the RV dealer if I ever got pulled over. There is a kit (Google is your friend) that is made that will mount a spare under the RV.

Watching this one. I know I'd have to stabilize that rack sliding into position, concerned about bouncing around.

When I mounted a truck style underbody storage box to my last TT I just used the bumper mount spare bracket on the tongue, worked perfect.

Jayco actually hung them under the rear of the trailer up until 2016 model year. Your dealer may be able to get the tire hanger from a 2015 parts catalog

I used the Bal Hide-A-Spare, various sizes available, very easy to install, tire is tucked up underneath between the frame rails.

That seems to be the only choice. But the Baja Edition has a covered underbelly... 🙁

Bal makes three different versions for mounting the brackets to the frame. You can mount it so the tire just touches the underbelly. What you need to do is measure the width of the tire, then measure underbelly to ground to make sure you have good clearance for the tire once its tucked up. I called Bal to get some suggestions and they were great to deal with.

One trip I burned a wheel bearing (thankfully it was on the right side). Emergency dictated to stop "NOW". I was on I-88E at 3pm so traffic was light (thank you Lord). After the smoke cleared.... Yea the tire almost came completely off. Tore the brakes up too. Disconnected from the 5r and ran around between towns for hours for parts, effecting repairs that included splitting the castle nut to get it off the spindle (wow on the side of the interstate). All parts fit except the new spindle nut (to damn small). So off looking again, I found a interstate trucking repair business, and while I was there the mechanic and I had long conversation (about the events), did I say it was around midnight now? The end result produced two things. 1- The right size castle nut (repaired and home around 2am) and 2- If I was to call him for a tow, how would he bring it here? He said I would hook it up by the king pin and tow her here. On three wheels! Damn! So my question to you is why would you need the spare tire? I have found in the eight years full timing that several dual axels TV did not come with a spare tire from the factory. I'm not sure it is a big ticket item. However I do believe those China bombs should be traded for Goodyear's.

I also installed one of these on my 5er and Its great. Before that I had it under the bed (rv bed, not truck bed ).

you can tow at a slower rate with just one tire... if you aren't over loaded... I would have taken the tire off and run it to the next "safe" work place I could find.. now out west that could be 100 miles you may or may not make 100 miles on one tire... you could put on your flashers and just plod along move all your stuff over to the side with 2 tires and well hope you make it... better than fixing it on the side of a freeway IMO...last option is a flatbed ... that isn't' cheap but AAA covers it...

I’ve towed equipment trailers with one tire off before, but I would only do it empty for a very short distance. Problem is on an RV there’s no such thing as empty like there is on an equipment trailer. Typically you also have to chain or strap that side of the axle up while in transport like that, otherwise the brake drum comes awful close to dragging without support.

My ‘15 28BHBE has the tire mounted under the front bedroom area, under the enclosed underbelly. Works like a truck spare tire crank design. Not sure why they got away from this design other than money.

Would you have enough room if the tire “sat” above/on the bumper instead of behind it a little like it does?

I haven’t gotten to it yet, but modding the spare tire is on the list so it sits “on” the bumper to gain a little more room for the bikes on the rack.

Maybe. But I'm liking the BAL undercarriage idea a lot more. About $70 and bolts on. I just need to go to my TT (in storage) and crawl under it to check out the underbody....

Mounting on the A frame increases your tongue weight. That may or may not be a concern for you. There are a couple frame mount spare tire carries that you can put in several locations and mount your spare under your rig. One brand is called Hide A Spare.
