Which valve stems do I have?
Sorry for what might be two stoopid questions, but here goes:
First, I'm looking to add a TPMS that has the valve screw-on, non-pass through sensors. In reviewing past posts and web reviews about this it appears I might need metal tire valve stems. Is this true? I haven't a clue.
Secondly, is there an easy way to determine if I have rubber or metal valve stems? The trailer is brand new and is equipped with Jayco stock Goodyear tires.
Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I have a TST system, and yes metal valve stems are required due to the weight of the sensor; a rubber valve stem is somewhat flexible - the concern is that the extra weight of the sensor would cause the stem to wobble and eventually fail.
A metal valve stem fastens to the rim with a screw fastener and is all metal except for a seal. It is not flexible at all. If your valve stems bend at all, they are not metal clamp in valve stems. There are some valve stems that are partly metal, but fasten into the rim with a rubber grommet (and no screw tightened nut). That is not what you are looking for.

John, the simplicity of this is, If you look at the valve stem and can visibly see a metal "nut" screwed onto the stem, you have a metal valve stem, if not, it is rubber.
Shorty
For what it is worth, as RVhiker stated, some "rubber stems" have a metal stem but are rubber at the base. When I initially installed my TST system, that is the type I had. I ran the TST system on them for a couple years until I replaced tires and stems with no issues.

I bought 6- 2 packs of them from a local auto supply store. Much less expensive and convenient because many tire shops don't stock them.
I still have 4 left as they have never given any problem but it's good to have a spare on hand.

I’ve read a lot about the requirement for metal valve stems with a TPMS, but have not had a problem with the rubber stems. Running the TST 507 and have never had to add air to any tire during the season.
