I had the same questions. I still have not purchased a hitch at this time. I am keeping my eyes open for one on craigslist though.

I have only towed my new trailer a few times. The tow home was in a 30 plus MPH wind. The trip went ok but lots of sway.

I loaded the trailer and even with the wind it pulls fine. I plan on putting one on but only if I can find one at the right price.

I would suggest hitting the scales to see the weight of the truck both with and without the trailer attached. Remember the WDH returns weight back to the front tires, so pay attention to the weight difference on the front axle.

Getting accurate weights is the best way. Next best is measure front fender to ground. If it raises more than 1/2 inch or your set up is not level you probably need a WDH. Just the 450# tongue weight alone tells me it is very likely you need one.

If your TV receiver's Weight Carrying limit is above your TT's "loaded" tongue weight one can tow without a WDH.

Jayco's published "dry" hitch weight for the 264BH is 485lbs..., I would think that a loaded tongue weight (ready to camp) for the 264BH would be around 700lbs.

The 264BH is a 29ft long TT, I would use 13% to 15% of the TT's loaded weight for the desired loaded tongue weight (RV & WDH manufactures recommend 10% to15%).

I used to tow my 26BH without WD hitch on short trips, 30-40 miles type stuff. I have class V receiver and purchased a separate 2 1/2" in ball mount and 2 5/16" ball since my WD hitch head was only rated to 600lbs in weight carrying mode. In weight carrying mode my Class V receiver is limited 2500lbs and ball mount was 2000lbs. My 26BH TW was ~850lbs .. I was well in spec.

Also I didn't get sway, but the short trips were always on county roads and we only traveled 45-50 mph.

Let me throw out a few different mathematical formulas to you..

Cost of your new trailer, $15K to 22K
Cost of your Truck ? $K
Cost of a WDH and anti sway bar ~ $500.00 - $600.00

Cost of your safety and your families lives - $PRICELESS

Sorry, I don't mean to be tough here, but all of the $$ you have spent on your equipment, don't guess, don't try to get out cheap.. The WDH and anti sway bar are for 1 thing.. Your safety... Not a place I would even think about skipping on...
You decide

I would look for a hitch on Craigs List. You should be able to find what you need for a reasonable cost. A WDH for a 29ft trailer is a good idea.

Didn't realize this was a thread about cost, rather I thought it was about capability. Although I have towed several trips without WD hitch...that doesn't mean I don't have one. The OP never indicated he was trying to avoid buying one either.

Your not being "tough", you are just not aswering the question being asked.

clubhouse, you are quite correct. I misread the OP's question.. Very sorry if I offended anyone.. Thanks for finding that...

Jayco website shows dry hitch weight, and even then it's more than 450. Chances are you'll load up the bellywith gear, put clothes in the wardrobe, have a battery on the A-frame and top 700# of TW. You've got plenty of truck, but it's designed to operate with X pounds over the steer axle. You should find CAT scales and see what your actual loaded weights are. Even slightly squirrelly steering can be a problem in some circumstances. My level of comfort increases when I've taken all reasonable steps to make sure my setup is optimal. Yours will vary but I'm sure you want to do it right or you wouldn't be asking the question. Enjoy the camper.

Can I ask why you plan on towing without a WDH? I have your same TT but my TV is a Yukon so you have quite a bit more capacity that I do.. My real concern here is not so much your WDH but the ability to install a anti-sway bar.. That's 30' of trailer to catch a lot of wind.. It doesn't matter if you have a tank for your TV... The trailer still can sway and tip...

I plan on adding sway tab on existing ball mount that I have. I have long wheelbase and a diesel engine so I was thinking that plenty of weight would be on front wheels. Sway is a scary thing that I really want to have control of. Just wanted if any one els does the same thing as in using sway control only.

When I was shopping for my camper, one of the items I always negotiated was a WDH in the deal. I would never attempt to tow my 26BH without it and may be looking into getting a different one that controls the sway better. I currently have a Pro Series. It is very scary when an 18 wheeler pulls up beside your or you get hit by a 40mph crosswind.

I've towed bumper pull trailers from 4000-12,000 lbs with and without WDH. IMHO the smaller trailers are horrible without a WDH. For the relatively small investment a WDH is going to be i can see why you would not want one. It literally takes me 10 minutes to hook up and leave. You will have a much more enjoyable towing experience with the proper WDH installed.

^ Agreed with Greenenvy1. Eventhough out TV and TT are worlds apart, getting one greatly improved my towing experience and control.

Not to say I don't have experience towing things I am a linemen with a CDL. I have been known to pull a 65' pole on pintle hitch. Loads up to 35000 lb been doing it for about 8 years now. So I think I can get by. Thanks for all the info all. I think I'm going to try a regular ball mount with friction sway controlled for now.
