why gray and black holding tanks?

I don't think anyone lets you dump "gray" water on the ground or street sewers.
So why seperate the two tanks?

its so you can dump all your black waste tank and then use the grey tank water (which should just be soapy water) to flush and clean the sewage hose.

There are plenty of places on public land you can dump gray if you’re not unreasonable.

I has a seasonal site in MA. We do in fact run the gray on the ground and it is very legal. Wife and I pump the black once a week. I would not camp with just one tank.

As a rule the grey tank fills up a few times before the black tank fills up. And so you should be able to empty your grey without having to empty your black tank. The idea is that the black tank should not be emptied until it is nearly full. And then flush it as someone pointed out above with gray tank water

I'm not allowed to dump gray watrer at any campground that I'v gone to. I do use the gray water to flush out the hose tho. I alway dump both tanks when we leave a campground. I wish the gray empied through the black tank
