OP: Since you are on ebay and dont mind buying from there they also have softstarts on their site. Here is the newest microair with bluetooth (allows monitoring of how much electricity is being used etc..).
https://www.ebay.com/itm/38540570919...Bk9SR_Kl6bTPYQ

The benefits of the hardwire vs the portable/surge suppressor is 1. they are available, 2. it works no matter what source for electricity you have. i.e. from generator, shore power or from onboard inverter/batteries. 3. it is half the price

As for the generator. It would most likely be able to easily start your AC with a soft start. It will not without one.

As for the Honda 2200i, I have one of these and run it off propane via the hutch mtn conversion. I purchased it off offer up for $800 (with the conversion already installed). It has NEVER tasted gasoline and only ever run off propane or NG (with is also an option with this kit). Because of this I store it in the trailer passthrough.

With this generator I cannot run the AC with anything else, but it does run the AC when I need it, we just turn off if we need to run something else, not hard to work around and we live in AZ we know heat... It does run/power our fridge, and hotwater heater and the microwave all at the same time off 120v. It will also run a toaster oven/air fryer (1600w) and even the DW hair dryer (1700w) without any issue.

While not all generators are created equal, most that are sized to at least 2500 will run anything you need, just not at the same time.

BTW, even when on shore power you CANNOT run the AC and hairdryer at the same time. It will over load the 30amp (if you have 50amp you are ok, unless running two AC at the same time). So either way you look at it you have to shuffle things around in any trailer to simultaneously run things (unless you have a nice inverter and battery setup that will supplement the shore power).

Good luck on your quest, just know it is possible to easily save money on these things if you look around and are willing to wait a little time, and put some time into looking. Patience is a virtue!

Understand all. I'm slowly getting there myself.
But for now, still enjoy the wilderness camping...

Same here but I use the Champion 3400 gas model. Runs one A/C with power for TV or other small draw. It will only run the A/C or the microwave or the coffee maker but no combo of any of the two.

I have a 2000 surge/1600 running Etrailer generator. After installing the soft start module on my 13,500 Dometic the genset ran it just fine. I ran it during a power outage out W West for close to four hours, the temperature was 102.

I ordered this one on Amazon. It was a little more $ than I wanted to spend, but it’s already set up for dual fuel and will fit under the bed cover on my truck.https://www.amazon.com/Pulsar-GD400B.../dp/B0BHXLT5D9

What do you think about this synthetic oil.

Briggs & Stratton SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Small Engine Motor Oil - 32 Oz. 100074 https://a.co/d/9qF50Oz

I also found this conventional oil like I use my lawnmower.

Briggs & Stratton 100005 SAE 30W Engine Oil - 18 Oz https://a.co/d/itISiCg

Just break it in with oil they might ship with it. Personally I use Royal Purple in my Honda. Get it at Walmart $8 a quart.

I know my next statement is going to cause some comments so let them come. Honestly the oil doesn’t need to be changed all that often. There is no clutch etc in it like on a motorcycle so a good synthetic will go for many many hours.

I agree that using a synthetic after the break-in period is a excellent choice. The oil brand one chooses is personal just like the brand of vehicle. I use Mobil 1 in all my vehicles, generators, tractors, snowblowers, all 4 cycle equipment, and 2 cycle synthetic in mixtures. Fuel wise in my equipment is non-ethanol.

I’m right there with you on oil changes. I have changed the oil in my riding mower 1 time in 9 years and that was last season. I only use it about every 4 weeks in between when the lawn service cuts. And only a few months a year I figure that’s not enough use to have to change every season. Besides i always end up making a mess changing oil.

We have 2 Honda 2000 we can run the A/C with. 1 Honda will run the A/C at sea level, not where we live and camp above 4,200 feet. We do not have a soft start...Yet.

I ran the heck out of my Honda EU2000 during the years I was spending the winters in Quartzsite. I always followed Honda's oil change interval as close as I could, which meant an oil change and air filter cleaning roughly every 2 to 3 weeks (100 hours of use).

I used 10w-30 dino oil most of the time, often just Walmart Super Tech. Easy to change the oil, and cheap insurance (11 or 12 ounces of oil per change) that just might extend the life of the engine. I figured Honda had its reasons for specifying the oil change interval of 100 hours.

That little Honda has operated well over 5000 hours since I bought it in 2011 and it still runs strong when I use it now. I've used it a couple of times this winter as backup when the the electric power to house went out.

It wouldn't operate the 15k btu air conditioner, but I bought a 2nd Honda and ran them parallel a few times to keep me cool.

I bought both high altitude jet kits for my Etrailer gen set, one for 3K to 6K and one for 6K to 9K. If you're careful the bowl gaskets will last through several changes.

Then I got to read online after the fact that it may not run my Dometic AC.
13500 BTU.

Dometic Brisk II Rooftop Air Conditioner, 13,500 BTU - Polar White (B57915.XX1C0)

Does anyone have experience trying to run this ac on a similarly sized generator.
Borderline the start at 2K watts is marginal and the run at 1.6K watts will only handle just over 13 amps which is what it will run without any extra load conditions i.e. warmer day

The Firman is the same as my Etrailer unit and runs my Dometic 13.5 just fine, soft-start equipped. The high altitude jet kits they have, approx $11 per, insure smooth operation at altitudes up to 9K

One other thing, start your AC in the fan mode only and let it run for a minute before kicking into AC (compressor) mode!

OP, if you do end up returning the small Generator and want one that will run your AC for sure, look at the 3500 Preditor inverter generator from Harbor Freight. They are great generators for a 30 amp RV and should run anything on it almost like you are plugged in to shore power.

The specs on that one look pretty good. It appears to be half the weight of my Predator 3500.

It will be able to power your AC without problems.

As for oil - I'll just toss out one suggestion. Run it for 30 mins and then do an oil change. Some of the Chinese engines aren't washed out as well as you'd think. Still some residual metal in there.

I changed the oil on my Predator after 30 minutes and there was more "sparkle and shine" to the oil than I expected. On the other side, I changed the oil in my Ryobi after 30 minutes and it looked fine.

Ok, but here is the nuts and bolts of properly sizing an Egen.
Amps X volts equal watts or power.
A Dometic 13,500 btu A/C under "ideal conditions" will draw 12 amps which equates to 1,400 watts!
Can it do it? Sure it can. Would I do it? Hell no!
Why beat the hell out of an Egen unnecessarily?
All you need is a warmer ambient or a warmer interior to push up the wattage to the threshold.

For those that may be intreated I watched my watchdog values change on my camper when it was idle, ac compressor start up spike , ac running. And ac running using the microwave. I’m not sure how accurate my watch dog is but the values seem reasonable to me.
