woke up to flood in our rv...heads up...

Well this happened during the fourth of July vacation. Husband and I had a few drinks...went to bed...woke up to the toilet overflowing and the water was pooled up in the back of our trailer...We couldn't figure out why or what happened...it was obvious that somehow the water valve stuck open letting the toilet fill but how? For the next few weeks we were shutting off the water everytime we left the trailer and at night...Well this weekend I finally figured out what happened. One of us (I blamed him but it was me..LOL) got up to use the bathroom in the night and when I went to flush the paper didn't clear the trap..it actually acted like a plug and since the trap didn't shut all the way the water inlet kept trickling-filling the bowl...Just a heads up to all to make sure when ya flush that the paper clears the bottom of the bowl...It was a mess to clean up...we had to open the enclosed underbelly to let the water escape...but I am so glad I now know how it happened...

Here is the way we do it. We use regular toilet paper and keep a container near by to dispose of the soiled paper. The container is lined with a plastic bag for easy disposal. Don't have to worry about the drain and/or valve clogging. Been doing it that way for 13 years now.

We just don't do #2 in the camper. That's what the campground facilities are for. For the small amount of paper used for #1, that goes in a small container with a bag.

The biggest downside with this approach is that you don't get to see the parade when you open your tank valves at the dump station. Some would say that's a good thing, but I have always enjoyed a good parade.

Have a houseboat and there is a firm "no paper" rule for marine toilets. Just carry the habit over to the RV. Small flip lid, bag lined waste bin always handy.

We also have the "NO PAPER IN THE TOILET" rule. A small trash can with a Walmart bag and a lid that closes very nicely. Oder has never been a problem.

We have used regular toilet paper in our boat head for the last 35 years. No problems. Now doing the same thing in our Jayco.

I use my RV toilet just like I used to use the one at home, but I do add a bit of extra water after each flush. Never a problem.

I drink the water from my fresh water tank too, otherwise why have one?

I'm with you. The whole reason we bought a camper is to enjoy the amenities. I dont want to walk to a camps facilites should nature call in the middle of the night. :excited:

getting back to the OP's flood, we came close to having that happen last winter in Phoenix. Luckily I stepped into the commode room and saw the water was just ready to overflow the bowl. It was clean. And it took a little doing to get it to drop into the black tank because no air was able to get in. The valve had not closed completely and allowed fresh water to drip into the bowl, eventually filling it. We're very careful now to make sure it's closed.

glad you found it before! We are careful to take the extra few seconds to make sure everything goes down and fills correctly now...what a lesson to learn...lol

Unless you're operating on city water, wouldn't the pump running wake you up?

mcfarmall, we've spent 112 nights in our Eagle. 111 of them had hookups. But if we did dry camp the pump might wake me. The pump probably would wake me, but my DW slept thru a fire in her apartment building, smoke alarms, fire engines, the whole bit. Didn't know about the fire until she left for work in the morning. That was nearly 40 years ago. She sleeps a lot more soundly now!

I have instructed the DW and girls 6 & 8 to prefill the bowl. A lot more water going down with the paper and solids seem to help.
