1983 Jayking and two questions

Hi all
I just bought a 1983 Jayco 12 Jayking, and I have two questions.

When I got it the front two lifts would not raise up as the crank was being turned, both cables were disconected so with a little work I got them both connected and the passanger side lift seems ok (when I remove the supports holding the front up the pass side cable tightens) but the driver side cable does nothing. Its like the cable is not attached on the lift side, so how do I access that and attach the cable as it should be? (crank side is fine other side needs something)
Question number two. The trailer rides very low, how can I lift this up?
I removed the wheels and the axel is hard to describe but it angles towards the back of the trailer, I'm wondering if I can pull them out and turn them so the angle is down instead of back which would lift the trailer. I'm guessing that may effect road ride but this trailer will be use only in the mountains around my house. The longest trip it may make will be 10 miles or so on rough dirt roads.
Thanks for any advice I may receive.

Wow! 1983! You're brave!

On a tour of the factory, we were told that Jayco can supply parts for any rv they have ever made.... and I'm only assuming that they can tell you how to deal with issues from that particular yr/model; you're situation will be a true test to that statement. If you can't get any helpful advice here, give Jayco a call direct at 800 283-8267. Heck, give them a call anyways and see what they say. Let us know how it goes. BTW... welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum!

I would say you have a torsion type axle, over time, the weight of the vehicle causes them to lose their spring. I am not sure if it can be replaced with a leaf spring axle or have it rebuilt.

Lift cables all messed up

I tried lowering the top the other day and two of the four cables snapped, in other words they are all messed up. Since this is going to be a take up to the hills type trailer, it doesn't need to be pretty, what I'm wondering is this: Could I cut or disconnect the cables and lift the top manually? How heavy would the top be? I'm wondering if I could climb inside and lift in the middle of the roof, brace it on the inside, then go outside and put a support at each corner. Redneck I know but would it work? I'm into the trailer like $200 and am not willing to put in much to make it work.
Thanks all,

You will need 4 people and a piece of strapping or 1x4 material cut to length to hold roof up(Had a cable break and did this to fix what a pain in the hind side.
