7-Pin or 4-Pin?

We are looking to purchase either a 2005-2012 1207 or 1007.

Do these all use 7-pin connectors or does it vary?

Current we have a hitch installed on our van but nothing else. If they are all 7 pin then we could just get that done now so we are ready when we find the used trailer we like.

Is there anything else we could get done now so we are ready? We only want to make one trip to uhaul to get this all installed. Hitch ball and mount and a brake controller? We might not end up with a trailer with brakes but if it's not much to have a brake controller installed then at least we are ready in case.

4 pin are lighting only - 7 pin have associated brake wiring included.

So say a Jayco 1207 with no brakes would have a 4 pin connector but one with brakes would have a 7 pin?

I have a 2010 model 1007 I picked up in December last year. It came with a 7-pin so I had a 7-pin installed on my minivan (although not all 7 wires were brought to the 7-pin connector on my minivan). I will eventually go back to the hitch install place to get the 5th pin (charging wire pin) wired. I don't need the other two (electric brakes and back up lights - neither are on my PUP). Once I decide to buy a battery for my PUP, I'll get that 5th pin.

The flat 4-pin are ground, left signal, right signal and brake lights. Those are a minimum for any trailer. Here's a link for converters for 4 to 7 and 7 to 4 incase your vehicle and trailer are mismatched.

I hope this gets you started in the right direction. Jerry B.

What type of van do you have, did the hitch come with it from the factory. Many brake controllers are just a simple plug in to a port under the dash, simple 5 minute job but don't waste money if you won't need it

If the link I provided above won't take you directly to the site, try copying it off this page and pasting it directly to your browser address bar. It will work one way or another.

I'd just get the 7 pin connector installed and wired completely (charge wire and backup lights included) minus the brake controller for now. If your trailer is 7 pin you're covered. If it's a 4 flat you just need a simple inexpensive adapter. If it doesn't have brakes again you're covered, if it does buy the brake controller then. No need to waste money on the controller if you don't need it.

I guess the safe bet is to have a 7 pin connector installed on your towing vehicle. The people who install it could reduce the cost of the install if they only wire the four wires needed as would be needed on a 4 pin flat connector. You could always go back if you find you have electric brakes or the ability to charge a battery on the camper while driving down the road. In that case, a 7 pin connector will always be needed coming from the towing vehicle because your trailer will always have a 7 pin connector to operate those systems.

Is this a pop up trailer? Many of them have surge brakes, no controller needed.

If you are putting a 7-pin connector on your TV, have it properly outfitted with all 7 wires. IMO it is dangerous to make it look like it has capabilities that are not there.

Our 2008 1007 had ETB's, so was 7-pin with a brake controller. If you get a pup without ETB's, you can use an adapter to bring it down to 4. And if you are like many owners, there is a good chance there will be a bigger trailer in your future, so the 7-pin and controller will come in handy then.

Any Jayco folddown 2004 or later should be a 7-pin. Prior to that they were a rectangular 6 pin for many years.
