We use the FM band almost exclusive... My antenna is small whip mounted to the outside corner of my POPUP trailer. Very seldom use the AM for anything anymore. back in the day some of those station like XERF Del Rio TX was neat to listen to...
You can see my AM/FM antenna mounted on the rear of my OFF-ROAD Trailer.

Have no trouble whatsoever using the FM just about anywhere we go including OFF-ROAD and BOONDOCKING... I have seen AM/FM whips mounted to the side of the BATWING HDTV antenna setups... In our case this would get my AM/FM antenna up a good 10 feet or so...
If you really want to listen to AM then solder about 75 feet or longer of single wire to the one you have and throw it way up into the tree... Should be easy enough to pull the wire back when you want to leave...
The only down side I can think of might not be a good idea having an long antenna wire like that connected to your radio during a close-by thunder/lightning storm.
If you are a real fanatic for having MUSIC with you then subscribe to SIRIUS RADIO.. I already had SIRIUS radio on my truck radio so I added the plan to be able to listen to SIRIUS through an internet connection... We get all of the SIRIUS RADIO music we want now on our local laptops tablets and computers... I have also seen campers using the portable SIRIUS radio sat antennas around their campers...
