The flat discs in the surface mount fixtures are ok IMHO. Since they tend to be directional, they take alot of the glare out of the fixture which I always hated anyway. The manufacturers put those fixtures in because they are cheap, duh! I have replaced fixtures above sofa, dinette and bed with the ball , rotating can like you would find in an airplane or the old conversion vans but they are a little tricky to mount.

I am going to install a flat disk LED on the outdoor fixture, I'm sure that it will be plenty bright enough, but more importantly, it will be cool to the touch whereby I will no longer concerned with the lens melting and a possible fire. I will consider changing to LED bulbs throughout my camper once I have a chance to lift it up and access my needs.
