Funky pop noise

Hi, I own a 1992 Jayco 1066. When cranking up the pop up about a third of the way up it makes a "pop" noise and acts like it skipped a gear tooth, slipped or something but continues to go up. I've got this nasty feeling that one day this "pup" won't go all the way up after it hits that hickup. Any ideas what this might be? I guess I'll just keep using it until something more alarming happens. Anyone else experience this? Thanks. I appreciate your feedback.

It sounds like your cable is pilling up when you crank it up and one round jumps off the pile up and makes that sound, fairly sure of this.

X2 cable is too thick in one spot and slips over to a different part of the cable winder drum.

Your cable is under quite a bit of tension. It is rolled up on a drum or spool. If you have ever wound up a water hose you will have seen the hose pile up in one area then switched over to a lower spot.
On a cable drum or spindle that is under a lot of tension when it hops from an area that has built up to a low area it does so with a pop. Heavy equipment that uses cable like a crane are specifically designed to not do this. The lowest cost systems like on a pop-ups don't.

When your popup is lowered completely there is no tension on the cable and so a nice neat cable is not possible. In short, no big deal, just an annoying sound and the knowledge that your cable could last longer it they had spent more on the system in the first place. Like a lot of things on almost any RV.

I had the same exact thing on my old pop-up. It was what they are explaining in my case. Just the nature of the beast, I took some silicone spray and slathered the cable on the spools to help it be more slippery and decrease the rubbing and popping but it still did it at times.

Did it eventually cause problems? Or was it just annoying?

If you have access to the winch, you can lift it, support all four corners, then respool the winch. Have someone help, use leather gloves, unspool the cable, you may need multiple helpers to do this, then guide the cable, keeping the cable tight as they slow crank up the cable.
