Heater Question

Hello, I am new to the forum. I recently inherited a 1982 Flight 8 pop up after the passing of my father. I am looking to fix it up like he had intended to do but need help with a couple questions I have. 1st. The canvas needs replaced, is there a company that the folks on this forum recommends? 2nd. It looks like it once had an awning, is this something that can also be purchased aftermarket? 3rd. I found the owners manual and it stated that the furnace is a “660 series” but does not mention the make or model. Can anyone steer me in the right direction for a newer model that would fit? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Congrats on the project and, welcome to JOF. I’ve seen the work from this place and it was very nice. https://youtu.be/Hdx_E1M07kk Canvasreplacements.com

The furnace sounds like a Duo-therm and an awning would be easy to get from carefree.

Welcome aboard. Sounds like a fun project. My dad and I rebuilt my brother's PU a few years back. Also recanvased our PU (1977?? Starcraft) decades ago. We used a local boat shop,. They used the old canvas for the template. They did a good job, it looked like new.

As for the awning. I'm sure you can get a new one that hangs in the bag. We had a canvas one made, used a cotton?? Rope sewn in. We feed it through the channel at camp, tossed it up on the roof, before we lifted the roof. It was a nice big awning.

My fading memory thinks you have a Duo-Therm furnace. Sorry, that's all I have for you.

OK, I have one more thing...You mentioned you have a manual, but maybe not for the furnace itself. Here it is, if you need it.

Sorry to hear about your dad's passing but I think he would be happy knowing you're taking on this project he didn't have the chance to complete. Good luck with it.

Welcome to the Forum.

Get some measurements of the current furnace, then you can plumb in pretty much any size you want/need. I put in a 34K BTU furnace in my 95 Jayco 1207, it’s a large PU. The furnace made a huge difference in heating the camper especially in late Fall and high in the Rocky Mountains. Take pictures and Label all your wiring before disconnecting the current furnace.

One additional source for canvas would be Bear Creek Canvas Bear Creek Canvas | Pop-Up Camper Recanvasing Specialists | Spencer WI

The two mentioned canvas replacement companies are likely to be cheaper than a custom job as they have patterns for a vast array of models. They will also have the sunbrella, window vinyl and screen material all on hand in multiple colors and ready to go.

For the furnace it may be just as easy to measure the space you have available and then peruse the catalogs of the current manufacturers for one that will fit. They are pretty simple devices, and fitment for the space is probably the biggest issue. If your pup has heat vents as well as the front output then you will need one with an appropriately placed knock-out for the venting.

IMO, the BTU output for a pup isn't overly important; in cold weather you aren't going to heat it the same as hardwall trailer. We always used ours to take the chill out of the air in the morning and evening, but we dressed for the weather too. It is not reasonable to expect to heat a tent the same as an indoor space - trying to maintain a steady 70 degrees.

I am very happy with the replacement canvas I got from Bear Creek. I like it better than the OEM. I'm sure they can do the awning with the bag to cover it also. My pop up has a furnace but I never use it. Makes a lot of noise and uses my propane, Instead I have a small electric heater that I use. My A/C has a heat strip that I use just to take the chill off if it's not real cold.
