Is this rumor true

Hi. I believe somewhere I read that pop up campers were no longer being made or sold by manufacturers. Are pop ups becoming a victim of new enclosed campers? Anybody else hear or read this?

I believe StarCraft has stopped offering them, and Jayco is down to one series. Viking still makes a bunch, along with the A frames. May be some other manufacturers out there too.

They aren't going make them if there is no demand.

Many hobbies have fallen victim to this thinking. If you don't offer an affordable way to get into the hobby, this is no one there to " move up" to your more expensive product. Just purchased my new pop up this summer. If you think people will go from a tent to a $20k TT I think they a sadly mistaken!

Yeah, we wanted to get a new one, but ended up with used. The cheapest one in town we could find new was 17k. We got a used one under 10 years old, that was only taken out for a total of 8 days for 5k.

We went from tent to 14k TT.
Sounds as if pop ups got too expensive for the hassle of dealing with raising and lowering rolling canvas.

Unfortunately "DEMAND" is no longer driven by the customer, it is being controlled by the dealerships.

Yes, they will build it if you will buy it but you cannot buy it if nobody is selling it....

Demand is always driven by the consumer!!! Dealers are not going to carry a product that doesn't move!

Pop ups used to be fairly inexpensive and a good way for young families to get into camping. But more recently, many of the pop ups are way too expensive and it is just as cheap to get an entry level hardside.

Our first new camper was a pop up. We shopped around, and the jaycos and a couple other brands were ridiculously expensive- 8-12k. We ended up with a Rockwood that we paid 6k for. It was flawless for 3 seasons of hard use and thousands of miles, then we sold it for 500 bucks less than we bought it for new.

I don't see pop-ups going away, but I could see manufacturers going down to a simpler single line much like Jayco has done as that provides more distinction in amenities and price to an entry level TT.

We used to camp in a Starcraft Astrostar, very small. In February we moved up to a Jay Feather 7 18RBM. We used the popup when we had kids at home, but now that we're older it's nice to have more amenities.

Yep

Was being the operative word. We now are on our way back from Alaska with it. 18 months old and 40000 miles of being pulled.
While still in good shape with everything working I think we could not get almost market value

The difference between a pop up and a hybrid is huge. Enclosed bathroom, tall refrigerator, kitchen cupboards, etc.

We had a hybrid for 2 years while I was working away from home and had minimal time for camping. I thought it was great, but wife had other ideas...

I have noted that many of you have a $50k to $70k tv, which is requires to pull a trailer with a frontal area approaching 75-85 sq ft. One of the advantages of my 12UD is weight ~ 2000lbs and a frontal area of under 30 sq ft, I can pull it with my (paid for) 08 Frontier up to the BRP with a 4.0L V-6 and average 17mpg over the whole trip. Yes we use the campground bathroom so we don't have to deal with the porta-potty. But we like the outdoor shower, 4'x4' is larger then most TT's offer. I had a 30ft Chris Craft Catalina years ago and taking a shower in a phone booth is not my idea of fun. In cold weather we canl use the CG showers just like we did tent camping. If I was considering a 3 month trip that would be a different ball game. But DW and I just go for 3 to 7 days and don't travel more than a few hours away, either west to the mountains or east to the beach. Hey we do his for FUN right?

Not me. I cannot pay for a tow vehicle that costs more than our first house
We have a $25 k truck six years old.
The 195 is a bit cramped for four month a year living. The kitchen dance. But we get 13 mpg with a six.

Two reasons,
1) With SUV's becoming more popular, Hybrids are much more desirable and you do not need a full size pick up to pull it, hence the SUV has changed what people can pull.

2) Price, New pop ups can approach the $12,000-14,000 range. for a couple thousand more gets you into a nice hybrid w a real bathroom, a real fridge, microwave, real cabinets etc....

My son has a 12' popup, with three children, two dogs, definetly is a bit tight for all of them to enjoy the whole camping expierance. So he is now looking for a used hybrid, he found a used 2 yr old 23F Hybrid, with a slide out, three expandable bed areas, it approached similar amenities to a 30TT. And this super clean unit was $13,500, and can be pulled by our Durango SUV.

A local dealer told me in years past they used to sell 100-125 pop ups every year, last year they sold 8.

Consumers dictate what manufacturers produce. Pop Ups will be around for quite awhile, just not as popular as they used to be. Nice thing about Pop ups is you can pull them with just about anything.

We bought our first PUP for 300.00 but of course we had to put a little money into it (new canvas). We paid 3000.00 for our second one. We loved both of them until it started to become a lot of work to set up and tear down and having to pop it up at home if the bunk ends were wet.
The kids are all adults and don't camp as much so we bought a teeny tiny TT that is perfect for the two of us. We tow it with an SUV.
PUPS are a great way for young families to get into camping but I agree that the prices for new ones are not much lower than what we paid for our TT.

It must be easier to set up the new pups I can have mine set up to dry in 10 minutes. ( top up bunks out, door installed. 1/2 the time it took to the same with a tent!

Actually, dealers only want to carry products that they can get the most profit from.
