MATTRESS QUESTION - Jay Series

Just acquired a 2010 Jay Series 1207. Has anyone replaced the standard mattresses with thicker ones, or used mattress toppers? The mattresses that come with the trailer are 5 inches thick... does anyone know how much (if any) extra height there is for additional mattress thickness or mattress topper? Thanks!

Welcome to the Forum from Western New York State!

The last pop up we owned, we used an egg crate style foam topper, that had to be rolled up, and put on the floor when we packed up to leave. Sometimes, we'd zip together a couple of sleeping bags, to put on top of everything, in an attempt to make the bed more comfortable for the DW.

Like @JFlightRIsk, we used an egg crate foam topper (er actually bottom-er). We still use it in our HTT, but find it more effective under the mattress as it helps with air circulation.

Our 1007 had about 3 inches clearance over most of the mattress, except under the door stowage, but it also decreases at the ends where the tenting material folds in. You can store a fair bit of stuff up there if you pay attention to how/where you are loading it. We left the topper under the mattress all the time - did not interfere with the roof operation.

I ended up with a 4 inch memory foam mattress and it was ok, but it wasn’t great.

I ended up putting a few cheap air mattresses under the foam mattress and it’s awesome now. It’s comparable to my sleep # bed at home. I highly recommend going that route

Instead of putting a topper on top of a junk or worn out mattress consider replacing. I replaced my standard mattress with a 10 inch mattress from Zinus. They have various thicknesses and types for firmness, etc.

Not a lot more expensive than a good topper and better in the long run.

Did the 10" fit under the top of the pop-up camper? That's a lot more mattress!

No, we upgraded to a 195rb 2 years ago, just to much trouble setting up and tearing down.

Zinus make 6 and 8 inch mattresses also. Even the 6 inch has to be better than the cheap foam the popups come with.

As to space, adding a 4 inch topper to a 3 or 4 inch mattress should be about the same as a zinus in the thinner models.

We bought one of these for the queen bed and it was a major improvement.

Fortunately we can leave it in place and just get the roof latched.

I'm a fan of having an air mattress under the foam mattress. I have an ALPS Mountaineering Velocity Air Bed (queen) under both of mine. I love the side air valve, and the mattress fabric is very tough.

To see how much room you have to add foam or blankets, put some empty facial tissue boxes on tip of your bed before you lower the roof. They will hold their crushed size pretty well when you raise it.
