Newbie with axle question

Hi everyone.

Just picked up a 1996 Jayco 1207 and I am about to start a remodel. The first things are going to be new canvas and I believe I need a new axle. The tires are worn on the inside and it’s a 23 year old axle.

Will any torsion axle work or does it need to be a dexter torflex? Also is it worth it to upgrade to a 3500 from a 2400 axle?

You can make any axle work if you want to do some modifications but a Dexter replacement will bolt right up. I replaced the axle on my 30 year old 1006 and the folks at Dexter were super to work with and the price was very reasonable with quick delivery time. Easy replacement with just four bolts. Upgrading to a heavier axle might be the answer if you have added to the weight of your trailer but the original axle rating will ride much smoother if you are essentially still at the original weight and just normal gear.

There should be a label on the Dexter Axle Tubing, take that information to them and suggest you like the 3500 lbs. model. It has stronger tubing and upsize brakes, upsize bearings and spindle. Yes they are very helpful.

I believe that if you are in need of a new axle, it is worth replacing with a better one. I had one go bad and took the opportunity to upgrade. There is no point of pulling off good axles to upgrade, so now is the time for you to do it.

Another thing is, if everything from the axle brakes, bearings and spindles are in good shape you can have it aligned in a truck aligned shop. Seems to much bow in the tubing. Might be a cheaper route.

I removed the stock axle replaced it with a 3500# axle with brakes. I extended the frame, added a place for a large ATV up front and a folding shelf on the rear. I also reworked the gas, plumbed an electric water pump.
