Pop Up with solar on the side

I am helping my kids rig solar. The popup has a solar on the side port but I would like to put a permanent panel on the roof and run a wire down to the solar port.

Has anyone done this? I was thinking of heavy 10 or 12 gauge flexible wire from the panel long enough to fully erect the popup roof and then coil or bungee the excess while down and traveling or storage.

This would be a benefit as the battery would charge even on travel days vs a suitcase that could only be set up while parked.

Perhaps look at making a pair of custom cables - one that is the proper length when stored and another to accommodate the extra length when fully raised. I would want to make sure that there isn't the possibility of the cabling getting pulled out of the side port while traveling and it seems like that would be much easier to do without trying to account for the coiled up excess.

Keep the wiring inside, just like they do for the a/c or ceiling lights. If you're worried about putting a hole in the roof you could make the connection on the side panel. However since they put holes in the roof of rigs for satellite connections you can safely do the same for the solar. Just use a plate like this:
