Repacked bearing questions

Hi, I decided to repack the bearings on my 1992 1006 Jayco Pop up camper trailer. All in all everything went pretty smooth. The only thing I encountered was not finding a washer for the front bearing. I've read where some campers come with a front wheel bearing washer and some don't. Is this true? Also, in order to put the cotter pin back into my castle nut, I had to back off the nut so far that it is no longer a snug fit. That has me a little concerned. Am I better off tightening the nut in order to get the cotter pin in, or back off until the nut is loose? Any comments or suggestions? Thanks for your advice.

You are supposed to tighten the castle nut, then back it off 1/8 to 1/4 rotation. If that is all you backed it off to get the cotter pin back in, then you are fine. It is supposed to allow a little room for expansion of parts due to heat. Don't back it off too much though. You don't want too much "play".

I always tighten mine up, then spin the wheel, then back it off--just to make sure the bearing is set. A little bit of play in the wheel is normal; you don't want it too tight or it will overheat.

Perhaps that missing washer is why you no longer have a snug fit with the castle nut. If it were there, you could easily apply the principles mentioned above.
