Safe trailer tongue weight? - adding extra tank and battery

We're new to the popup world, having recently obtained a 2008 Jayco Jay Series 1207 in good condition. Planning on boondocking a bit, and want to outfit with dual 20# propane tanks and dual 6v batteries (currently 1 tank, and 1 battery). here's my question ... do I have to worry about how much weight this will be on the trailer tongue?

from what I can see, recommendation is that trailer tongue weight should not exceed 10-15% of the total trailer weight ... so if GVWR is 3,000 lbs I should be safe putting 300 lbs on the tongue?

I haven't weighed the tongue (and frankly not really planning on it unless I have to), but if all I'm adding is another 20lb propane tank and ~75lb battery, I should be still well under the safe limit, right?

thanks

10 to 15 percent is the acceptable range. 13 to 15 percent usually provide safer handling.

Even though the propane tank is up on the tongue. Not 100% of that weight is on the ball. Farther back from the ball, greater percentage of the weight is on the axle verses on the ball.

Hard to say, it also depends on all the other stuff your hauling.

Personally I would carry a spare tank, in the back of the TV. Mostlikely the only time you will need a spare tank is when you need the heat.

If you go much above 15% there is a chance the tow vehicle could have steering problems. That said, you also have to look at the max tongue weight the car can handle per it's limitations.

But a lot of people carry 2 30s and 2 6 volts. I would load your trailer as is for travel & scale it. With the popup on the hitch and off the hitch to see what your current tongue weight is. Park the car just off the scale, get a weight, then jack it off the ball to measure the tongue weight. While you are there make sure you also aren't over the axle or tire max. Alternatively, get a second 20, and then carry a third as a spare.

You can compensate by more weight behind the axle, as long you do not exceed the GVWR or axle rating. Just search the WEB for Trailer loading calculator.

This might help. First used this method when we had an Airstream back in

the late 70's.
