Shepard’s hook
Help please has anyone else ever put the shepherd hook in past the second button so you can’t get it out of the mount? If so any ideas on how to get it out.

Under perfect circumstances of tools and material, here's what I would do. Get a VERY stiff piece of heavy gauge wire, such as a really good coat hanger. It has to be able to slide into the hole. I would cut a piece of it about 4" long, and make 2- 90* bends, 1 at each end. You want to be able to slip the wire into the hole, and be able to press the button down just enough to pull it out. The bend at the other end of the wire, is to get a firm grip on it, without the wire slipping while you're twisting it to push the button down.
I'd prefer to use a pair of Vise Grips, or a good pair of pliers as a second choice.
In an imperfect world, I might try getting at it with a small knife (carefully!), or the can opener attachment on my Leatherman tool, since it has a bit of a curve to it.
I hope this helps a little, or at least gets your imagination stirred a bit for a device to press on the button.

Another thought, if you can push the shepherds hook in a little farther, you might be able to get the tip on a narrow knife blade into the hole, and on top of the button. While holding the knife blade in place, pull the hook down slowly, using the knife as a sort of ramp out of the hole.
Last resort is drill out the pop rivets, and re rivet back in place after you get the hook out. That requires a pop rivet tool, and the correct length and diameter rivets. Good luck, welcome to the forum from New York State, and let us know how you get it free.

I can't tell from the picture, but is there enough room to stick a flat file or punch in there to push that back?

I always carry one of these with me in the TT & one in my portable tool box.
You should be able to insert and twist it and that would push the ball in.

That sucks. I did that with mine once or twice. Luckily ours was screwed in. I finally put a block behind it, so we cannot do that again.
If you are at home, and can find a piece of flat metal, I like banding strap, you could cut a piece off, bend over a little handle, bend it with a little curve (kinda like an old shoe horn). Slip it in and "Jimmy" it out.
Personally, I would replace the rivets with little sheet metal screws as this will not be the last time.

Try a sharp pick that will “bite” into the button and allow you to push or pull it in ... good luck

Been there, done that...
When I did it, I found that, if I pushed the pole even further up into the mount, that gave me enough room to slip a slim, flat-bladed screwdriver in, and use it to depress the button enough to pull pole and screwdriver out, together

Rivets? That sucks. When I did that ours had screws.

If you push up on the pole hard enough, while pulling it out, the button may depress enough to clear and get out. try twisting it a little too so its off position a little

Thanks everyone for the helpful hints. I tried the hanger but it bent when I pulled down on it. I also tried to put several different sizes of screwdrivers in to push the button and an awl. I couldn’t get the right angle or there wasn’t enough space to get them in. So I decided to be smart and drilled out the rivets and put screws in the holes. I’m sure it won’t be the last time it happens but it will be easier to fix.

Thanks so much for the update. I hope it is the last time it happens, but now you're ready for it. Happy camping!
