What would you do :-) (Roof Rack Install)

Found a great Roof Rack. I need to install it on our 2016 8-SD. The instructions say to mount it within a 1/2 an inch from the edge of the unit. That would be on top of the moulding. No problem, a little black butyl tape some sealant leave out the pad and I love it or, inside the moulding with the pad and hope for a hard mounting point. What would you do? I like option 1 with 1.5 inch lag bolts. Is there a schematic of the roof available?

Thanks we love our Jayco SD-8 I can no longer lift our kayaks up and onto our mini-van roof due to an injury. We purchased the Swagman 80510 Roamer LT pop up trailer rack. I'm extremely impressed with the product. Almost over built :-)

Thanks for looking

Our rack was mounted into the rails, and that may be the best way. The roof really isn't very thick, and it is pretty easy to figure out just how thick it is. 1.5" lags is very long IMO.

Just pop the top a bit and measure the outer and inner wall height. Subtract the two, and you will have the roof thickness. The structural thickness of the side wall is pretty easy to see visually as well. If you use the inboard positions you might want to try to line it up with the skirting in the inside and use through bolts with washers to distribute the load. This could be hidden in behind the skirt.
