NO personal experience with the protective...
NO personal experience with the protective coating but have awning toppers on this unit and had them on our 2011 (destroyed in a tornado.) THey do tend to make a little noice when the wind hits them...

WE bought one on our last 2 campers. SO far haven't used it, but like the peace of mind just in case. Read the fine print before deciding because some are certainly better than others.
