I used rubbing alcohol to clean the mounting surface for the LED strip and just relied on the sticky backing to hold it in place. Going on 14 months now with no issues.

I also didn't like the small weight margian that the 13" wheels provide. I recently upgraded to 14" wheels with 205/75/14 tires. They fit perfectly with plenty of clearance and no rubbing issues.
