The second wire on the reostat is ground so that will not work for your control panel on the new unit. You will have to pull a new wire from the control panel or relocate the conrol panel somewhere...

Grind down a hacksaw blade leaving the teeth only on one side. Slide the blade in the lock along the key with the teeth facing the key. You should be able to pull out the broken key this way.

It is on my 2015 Greyhawk FK. An easy way to check is put a meter on the battery with it plugged in and if the voltage reads over 12.5 volts it is being charged.
