The dent could have been by something that was foam wrapped
when a stud bends, it bends from end to end, not dramatically in the middle as this appears to be....

Agreed. I do not believe this to be a bowed stud. I can't see a 2x2 bowing in just the center and/ or being strong enough to pull in the aluminum.
