LED Conversion Power Usage Report

A number of people have asked how long you can go after changing out to LED lights. So here is my little report.

This past weekend we boondocked for three days along the North Shore (MN Lake Superior lake shore). It was cold and windy all weekend. We had no generator, but I did bring an older spare battery (but found it had lost its charge over a period of a few days just sitting). The primary battery is a group 24 Interstate battery (85 amp/hr). We were conservative with our power usage, we used the stereo for a little bit (hour or so), frig was used on propane, with a 12V clip on frig fan, and moved the slide out and awning in and out on battery too. We only turned on the lights in the area where we were at. We ran the propane furnace every morning and night for a couple of hours, I would guess about 10 hours total.

I checked the battery shortly after getting setup and it read 12.4 volts (after moving the slide out and awning). When we left this morning I checked the battery and it ready 11.7 volts after closing up and before hooking up.

I did take a number of amp readings but did not write down the information. I was surprised who low the phantom draws were.

I would say that is very good battery conservation! I know for sure our battery would be dead with that usage and stock lights!

It is truly amazing how much battery power you can save with the LED lights.
My parisitic draw with nothing on is .65 amps
One of my 10 led lights draws .17 amps
One of my 30 led lights draws .45 amps
ONE standard 921 bulb draws 1.04 amps

By the way I was up on the shore of Lake Superior last weekend too! Really just passed through on Friday and Sunday. Spend the weekend at a cabin in Canada just south of Thunder Bay.

Any suggestions on where to get the best prices on the LED's? My plan is to switch out one in the bedroom, the bathroom, and a couple out in the main salon so we can use those when we are on the battery [mostly just overnite on the road]. Use a generator if we are dry camping for more than overnite. Only using the one battery to save weight.

The voltage chart below may be helpful for those wondering what the battery voltage value represents in a battery's state of charge:

Most of the lights are on at any given time in our TT. I've replaced all but (2) of my 921 bulbs with SMD48 LED Panels. The first thing I noticed was that the cooling fan in my converter hasn't come on once this season. The DW noticed the cooler temperatures of the light fixtures in the compact spaces of our TT.

Well worth the investment.

Spending winter in a 30 amp presents power concerns and I'd like replacing our 921s with leds. So far I've wasted about $45 at CW for what amounts to a pair of night lights, so I'm wary. And I'm done paying outrageous prices for junk.

Searching for "SMD48 LED Panels" on Amazon it shows several at prices from under $2 to $9 and they all look the same but for pigtails.

So, would this one work? http://www.amazon.com/White-Interior...rds=48+smd+led

If not, which would?

Hope I'm not hijacking.

I ordered mine from eBay on my old rv, came on a slow boat from china, 2-3 weeks. But was well worth it.
My new one is all led....really nice and much cooler.

Any RV dealer will have outrageous prices for this. Those lights look good but the comments section suggests they are a little to the blue side.. I did my entire RV a few years ago at $15-25.00 each light
