9 Weeks, 9,000 miles, Lots of Memories

Well,
We finished our trip from SW Ohio to California and back today in our 165 Sport.
9 Weeks, 9,000 miles.
The only mechanical problem was replacing our 12V convertor on the road. 30 minutes, $185 bought on Ebay.

Favorite places Sedona, AZ. Cambria, CA. Carmel, CA. CA-1 Coastal Hwy. Yosemite NP. Lake Tahoe, CA. SLC, UT. Concert at Redrock Amphitheater in Golden, CO.

Modifications I want to make:
1. Counter top board that fits on top of the 3 burner stove for more counter space when preparing food, but grilling outside.
2. A few hooks in the bathroom and around the camper for hanging misc. item on.
3. Charging station under cupboard where there is already a double 110V outlet.
4. Put shelving in 2nd closet that currently has a coat hanger rod. Too short to hang anything.
5. Mount 3 drawer storage cabinets on upper bunk area so we don't have to lay them down hen traveling.

The trip went pretty good. the only thing we learned was to travel early in the day to avoid winds.
I think we'll limit our trips to about 6 weeks. We rushed back after Denver just because we were road weary.

I'll have a full size truck before we attempt a West Coast trip again :-)

Kind regards,
Doug

Doug,

The route you took appears to have caught some of the nice areas to visit and camp.., can't help but to walk away with some great memories! One thing about the United States, there is always somewhere new to set up camp so I'm sure your next trip will be just as much of an adventure.

I don't know what it is about extended trips, but I always seem to come back with some mods in mind as well.

Bob

And I thought you werre going to call when you came through AZ.

Doug, you sure had a wonderful trip!
The enhancements to your Sport165 caught my eye. I added a shelf in each of the cabinets on either side of the Radio/cd. I use a large cutting board on the stove top for storage. Did you have trouble with medicine cabinet door in bathroom coming open? I have drilled a hole in door frame and plastic frame and run a plastic/rubber line through, tied off.

Sorry I missed you Muelldawg,
We never came close to Phoenix.

Haven't had any problem with the medicine cabinet.
The overhead cabinets are a little weird being slanted. My wife ended up cutting as box to fit in them and keep stuff from falling out when you open them.

Kind regards,
Doug

Doug, where are putting the upper bunk 3 shelf storage cabinets? I like the idea. Will the upper bunk still be available for use?

Richard,
The 3 drawer units I'll just screw into the bottom of the bunk.
We took the mattress out of the bunk and just use it for storage.
We put 2 ea 3 drawer units up there along with dog food container and computers.

The bunk will not be useable.
I'll post some pictures when I get mods done over the next couple weeks.

Kind regards,
Doug

Glad your back home safely and thanks for the awesome pics/stories you shared during your trip. I would love to do a out west road trip like that some day! The counter top thing...the PO of our TT made up a 3/4 or 5/8" plywood top that has been sanded and finished to go over the stove burners. they uesd some 1 1/4" dow rods cut short for legs and are just high enough to clear the burners after mounting to the bottom of the top. Also, they used rubber foot ends on the legs to keep it from moving on the counter while in tow. Thought I had a pic somewhere..

Ah,
Exjay that sounds like an easy design for DIY.
I was thinking I'd have to glue a couple strips across the bottom to lock it in with the burner cover rods.

Thanks for the information and kind comments.

Best regards,
Doug

Doug,

We bought a nice cutting board at Camping World that sits on the stove and has a rubber mesh bottom so it doesn't slide around. Super handy. The only downside is that you can't put it back in place immediately after you've used the stove because it's still too hot.

Here's what I ended up with.
1. 15" x 20" cutting board with 2 blocks on bottom to lock it into stove cover grid. $10 Walmart

2. Charging station made from drawer organizer with several pockets for cell phones, mp3 players, et. $8 Walmart
I screwed it to wall above a double out let in the hallway.

3. I wanted to stabilize our 3 drawer clothing bins. I cut a 2x4 to fit snugly across width of bunk. Screwed through bins into 2x4. No holes added to TT

The only other things I have planned is to remove hanger rod from closet over bed and add 2 shelves instead.

Then onto the sewer hose storage mod.

Cheap, easy and quick lol

I am all about easy :-)
