Thumbs up Wal-mart Locations !!

Have you ever traveled long hours on the road and just needed a place to 'crash' for the night (not intending to "camp" that night)? Wal-mart could be the answer!

--We have found it much easier to pull into Walmart, level our tt, go in and do some grocery shopping, then come back to the tt and get to bed! No park fee's; granted no electric hook-ups. Some Wal-marts even have patrolling security guards!

--Keep in mind, if you are boondocking at Wal-mart: to keep it to one night; it's best not to pull out the lawn chairs and picnic tables; take up the least amount of parking spots as possible; and clean up after yourself. Being a curtious boondocker keeps a free overnight stay possible for future boondockers.

--Wal-mart "no overnight parking" stores exist. If not sure, check with the manager or the security guard. (Wal-marts who don't allow overnight parking could be bound by a "City Ordinance" not allowing it).

Here is a website that is kept pretty current to help you find a Wal-mart that allows overnight stays, and to let you know which ones do not.... http://www.allstays.com/c/wal-mart-locations-map.htm

Happy Boondocking!

Earlier this year we did not find a single Wal-Mart in Arizona that allowed overnight boondocking. As I recall, there is a legal prohibition against this practice throughout the state of Arizona, perhaps because there are so many commercial RV parks there (and probably a strong lobby).

We stayed one night in a state park near Tuscon that had good facilities but it was HOT! We covered our windows with towels, blankets and a felt-backed tablecloth and it still took several hours for our trailer to cool off after we arrived. I think it was 104 degrees that day. (We always carry a bag of clothes pins just for this sort of situation).

We also found a WM that was bound by a city ordinance prohibiting overnight parking in rv's in Colorado. We wound up down the road at a Home Depot. The locater map on the website above seems to be pretty accurate with the WM's that do not accomodate rv overnighting.

When we travel through the heat (usually summer) where it doesn't cool down below low 70's, we opt to pay for a campground just to have the elec hookups for a/c!

I'm not 100% sure what the rules are here in Owensboro, KY, but I have seen the occasional overnighter at the Walmart nearest my home (just a mile down the road). We also have another Supercenter on the east side of town, but I've yet to see anyone staying there.

Wal-Mart is very popular for over night stays. I see people parked all the time here in Pikeville, Kentucky. Cracker Barrel also allows some RV parking, just check with the manager.

There was a blog on RV.net about Walmarts and a list of all Walmarts who do not allow overnight RV parking. I have read that most of the problems are as a result of a few bad eggs who overstay their welcome and ruin it for everyone. The Walmart in Great Falls MT. did, does allow overnight parking and a couple of years ago I was there staying at the KOA and several times we went to Walmart for groceries and did see more than one RV that had been there for several days.

Over night stays are not what I consider boondocking. Now two weeks AEP lands with no hookups thats Boondocking.

Any walmart that does not allow overnighting is because of a local ordinance.. Sam Walton always thought that RVers made the best security guards..

I usually travel at night, head out at supper time, avoid the traffic. easier on the truck to drive at night when it is cooler. Generally a 3 hour drive to our destination, and I pull into a Walmart to stay overnight. I don't like going into a campground at night. Spend the night at Wallyworld and then in the morning do our groceries and what not, fuel up and then get to the campground.

When at Walmart, I park as far as possible away from the store, never had a problem.

As in my post in Ultra weight, I stayed at the west end of Saskatoon on HWY 7, on the way to Rosetown. I asked a greeter if it was okay. He told me it would be fine, just park far away and don't leave garbage. I thanked him and said I appreciated being able to stay.

He knew that it was very likely that you were going to go in and buy something the next morning before you pulled out.

I did spend the night at WM in Durango, Co before I knew it wasn't allowed.(City Ordinance). I was in a "B" and except for the fiberglass top, there was nothing that gave it away as anything except a passenger van. I parked at the outskirt of the lot and no one said anything. I didn't know about Cracker Barrel. They have a great breakfast.

Here's a list of No-Camp Walmarts.

When we are traveling and planning to Wal-Mart camp, I always look up a candidate out ahead on my Garmin GPS, which also has the phone number along with the address information. My wife then calls and asks permission. If we are turned down, we just look for another Wal-Mart on down the road.

I have friends that stay at Cracker Barrell. I have heard that Lowes and Home Depot also permit overnighting but know of no one who has actually stayed.

You know someone now

Walmarts along I-70 from Golden up to Glenwoods Springs do not allow overnighters. We did stay at a Home Depot somewhere west of the grade up the Rockies (can't remember which exit). Also, have stayed at the Costco on a couple of trips just east of Glenwood Springs. Both times, we asked the manager where we could park.

Most of the Walmart and Cracker Barrels in New England prohibit overnight parking and are even posted as such. I have been to Carbelas that have RV parking lots, but do not recall if overnight parking was allowed. Our Bass Pro Shop at Patriots Place in Foxboro, Ma does not allow overnight parking.
In some towns it is due to the local ordinances. In tourist areas it is due to the local campgrounds wanting you patronage so local businesses comply by posting their property as NO RV's overnight. I have seen this in the Lake George region in NY State.

Definitely have to reiterate that WM's are bound by city ordinances! God Bless WM, but if the City/County dictates no overnight, then so be it!

We always call ahead and ask specifically "where can we park our rv overnight while shopping.." and they will tell you then where you can or if you can't!

Any town that says I cannot overnight at Wally World or Costco will not see one thin dime from me.. I just keep on going and let my wallet do my talking.
